I understand many new-hires on the 747/MD are based in Anchorage and must commute. I have also heard that a number of the schedules in ANC that are available to the most junior pilots are generally not commutable from the lower 48. Is this generally true? I have heard such mixed information about this and about the timeline for a junior 747 FO to change bases to SDF. I ask these specific questions because I currently fly a big Boeing, and so I was led to believe that I would probably be assigned to the heavy fleet if I was hired.
I know things have slowed down a bit, so my information is undoubtedly old. Do I have the right picture of things?

Frank,
That's the gist. I would say "not commutable" might be a little bit strong, but the trips in ANC have definitely gotten worse, with a lot more reports. If past trends hold up, you could probably get down to SDF within a year or two, but if the music stops, someone is going to get stuck in ANC.
