It's a SWA guy addressing a former AirTran SWA guy. He's talking about AirTran.

AirTran was pulling in record profits at the time. Bankruptcy wasn’t even a minute possibility.

Don’t worry. What happened to us at AirTran can only happen if your pilot group has no spine. Just stand up for yourselves, insist on arbitration, and you’ll be just fine.

Actually, their profit margins were shrinking considerably and their aircraft orders were being deferred. They grew services in Milwaukee, Atlanta, Baltimore, Orlando, and a few smaller stations but quickly ran out of new markets to grow in. In 2007, AirTran posted a net profit of $52.7 million (despite losing $2.2 million in the 4th quarter of that year). In 2008, they posted a net loss of $273.8 million. AirTran’s net income in 2009 was $134.7 million. In 2010, their net income was $38.5 million. Southwest’s intent to acquire AirTran was announced in the fall of 2010, and the actual acquisition did not occur until May of 2011.

Anyone can ride the wave to the top, only to have the airline collapse and find themselves starting over.

No airline is immune. None of us was prescient in our choice of airlines.

This business has speed bumps. If you think you’ll make it through a 40 year career without hitting any, you had best study a little history.
40.... if you think you will make it through 10!

Years ago I was riding in a crew van with a FedEx CA who was less than a year from retirement. He told me “Son, you never know if you made the right choices in this career until you are looking back from retirement. Get on with the first airline that sells tickets under its own name that hires you and settle in for the ride.”

Looking at the history of commercial aviation this advice is not infallible but it is solid advice in more cases than not.

Sometimes you don't even know then. My Dad was retired from UAL when they dumped his pension to the PBGC. Some senior Whale guys went from $100K plus to PBGC max of $44K. Talk about sucking.

Thumbs down

It’s been awful quiet around “AS” recently... has anyone heard any good rumors about a merger / buyout?
