Is AS a destination airline now?

Alaska is a destination airline just like Minot,ND is a place that one can decide to live out the remainder of his/her life. I’m getting close to retirement and this dysfunctional airline is it for me. When I was a young buck many many moons ago, an old crusty captain once warned me to never trust this management and he was absolutely right on. For anyone under 50, it would behoove you to seek employment at the big 3, FedEx and UPS. No job is perfect but one can have a significantly better career at these airlines. Do you want to work at 7-Eleven or Costco? This TA will pass and the mindset of this management will never change. In the next year, Alaska will be back to being a solid mediocre airline to work with an ever increasing number of grievances.

AS will have to continually move, when the market moves, to stay competitive and attract and keep talent, they know this. Right now we are the top NB, I think the next 3 years will surprise even the most negative on here.

As much as there are reserve work rule improvements, they can only work with an adequately staffed crew especially under PBS. When was this airline ever adequately staffed? I’d have to see the final TA but if history is an indicator, this management will manipulate the language to its full extent which means that the pilots will get screwed, both directly and indirectly. This is from someone who sat reserve for 8 years not by choice.
Any aspiring airline pilot would list Alaska in the bottom of the top ten airlines. What exactly does this place offer that is industry leading? Okay, if this TA passes we will be until the big 3 and SWA surpass us in less than a year. Snap up in September’23 will not be enough. This TA for the most part is industry average and our competitors’ will be industry leading. So, is Alaska a destination airline? Yes, for those who are too lazy to seek better opportunities, who cannot get hired else where, who are too old, and for the few who actually love the Koolaid here. It is however, a good place to pull over and get a type then move on. Shoppers, don’t fall for the Alaska discount! The best we can hope for is a buyout by DAL, UAL, or even SWA.

The pay rates in the new TA will leave AS pilots in the dust financially compared to their peers at UA/DL/AA/WN/FX/5X.
I hope someday that I am proven wrong.

Are you in the training department? If so, have you flown a normal line for a whole year recently as a line captain with younger and newer FOs? In my entire career here at Alaska, we’ve never been competitive to attract and keep talent because 1) We just didn’t grow until we were forced to and 2) Alaska is not a very desirable place to hang your hat. It’s no longer the only PNW based airline, as you’re aware. Fast forward to our TA. Do you really think that this TA will attract and keep pilots? Only if they want to drive to PDX. The TA solves many of our current inadequacies but not enough to attract and retain pilots in my opinion. 12 days off on reserve is one.

Outside looking in, there's a reason I left AAG. I found better elsewhere. Found better QOL, room for me to fly more than just narrow bodies, and still live in PNW with no issues. I still don't see this TA making the necessary improvements after all the other legacy carriers have their contracts finished. It just brings it up to the standard that was 2015. Just my perspective and experience.
