And that's not even close to how far some other airlines have been flying the Max 8! Batik Air in Malaysia was (or is) doing a flight that is regularly coming in at a shade under 9 hours flight time in the -8. Ouch.

I didn't think we were going to get the 8

Thanks

At least if it’s over 8 hrs you’ve got a relief pilot.

and they seem pretty confident on the 8. I don’t think a 9 has the legs

Not if it's during banker's hours, per 117 you can go to nine hours without augment.

I can almost assure you that augmented operations would be a no-go bright line in the sand for the bean counters.

Besides, that would suck in a guppy.

Whether or not you get a relief pilot depends on the regulations of the country where the airline is located. 14 years ago I took a contract at Air India after retiring (think bankruptcy) from one of the big three here a few years earlier. I ended up flying the B777 with 22 year old FOs that had less than 500 hours total time from FRA to ORD in the winter with just junior and me for 10.5 hours. India allows two pilot operations for flights scheduled under 10 hours so those flights were scheduled at 9:59.

As growth takes place, more of developing countries are going to have very green FO. I remember an incident where the FO had 250 hours. That included sim hours and sitting in the right seat with hands off the controls, just looking up things and reading checklists.

One particular airline in the 'developing world' with strong presence in the US has implemented some very creative flight time limit rules where you can be stuck in the aircraft with another guy for 11 hours at night and then they force you into signing discretion report to extend those by another 2 hours. All within the legal framework they created themselves having the local Aviation Authority in their pocket.
When you file fatigue reports they just get brushed under the rug.
Rules created with the pandemic as the excuse, but they seem very comfortable with the status quo.

I always thought ALPA should've canned the 'subsidies' argument for foreign carriers and instead lobbied for any passenger flight operating in US airspace be subject to Part 117. Tack on to that the ATP rule, apparently.

Can't do that. ICAO.
