Big thing is cost of living. Say I move my family to Bay Area…no way we get something comparable to what we have here. Especially with rates now. Another $1000 a month in housing at least. Plus high utilities. Higher gas prices to commute 2-3 hours to SFO since that’s all we could afford.
Another big one is Cali state income tax. Factor 10%. At top end United 737 pay, take home would actually be less than top end 737 Alaska pay.
Or I commute for 35 years. Not sure I’d enjoy that with a young family. Say United has 4 days more off a month. I’d eat a few of those in commuting. Doesn’t exactly seem worth it. Tough decisions.

Besides, United has a multitude of bases around the country. Not just San Francisco.
These are all personal calculations. But like someone mentioned earlier, make the big leaps now while you can. It only gets harder as you get older.

AS is a good company, UA is a good company. Your timing is awesome, if you want to fly wide bodies, go to UA, if you want to drive to work, come to AS. Don’t listen to the angry mob on here. They obviously screwed up their own careers, don’t let them screw up yours. Both will be great careers, there are differences for sure, but either way you should have an amazing career. You do what’s right for you and your family. I have found in life you listen to happy successful people, not angry failures.

This is to rational for most on here. We base most things on APC with pure emotion, mostly anger, and gross generalizations. Most here are unable to really think. So remember at UA you will probably never work, make 120 hours a month, upgrade to CA on the 787 in 2 years or less. A friend of mine, whose friends with another friend, says he gets bought off his 787 trips every week, so you will never have to commute. Your an idiot if you don’t go to UA. It’s all BS, no place is perfect but every airline is perfect when compared to Alaska on here 🤔

You live in a country where you can do anything, be anything. If you work hard there is very little you can’t achieve here. If your life has not turned out the way you wanted, most likely you only have yourself to blame. Own it. To many on here are lazy, expecting an hourly rate job to somehow make them rich and happy. The two don’t always coincide, but you alone can change your station in life. The loudest on here are “angry rambling idiots”, their lack of success and achievement should surprise no one! I am confident wherever these clowns were hired, they would have found a way to blow it. You have heard the expression, “you can’t fix stupid.”
