Will PHX Always Be Senior?
Read all the older threads from the drawdown a few years ago, but does anyone have any updates in 2019? We're looking to domicile in PHX for family and would like to avoid commuting long term. AA's my top choice but will PHX always be this senior? Even with the fast AA hiring pace?
Slow progression and it's weak long-term position between DFW and LAX are our biggest concerns. Just trying to get smarter on it's outlook now that the dust has settled a bit.
Thanks to the few of you I've already talked to. Your personal experiences on this site have been invaluable!

I think it will be senior for quite a while. It looks like the base size has stabilized. I imagine once the mechanics get their contract they will make it a 737 base, since there's a lot of flying in and out of there. I've been here 5 years and would only be about 70% on the FO list, I'd be about 35% at LAX. The top 162 (of 232) can hold Captain in LAX, so there are a lot of guys not willing to commute to upgrade. PHX does have quite a few retirements coming up, so that will help. 42% of the CAs are 60 or over. 55% of the FOs are 50 or over. I think it will be senior for the next 5-10 years unless they make it a 737 base and increase the base size, then it might go junior on the 737. There are a lot of guys there that swear they'll never fly that plane again.

It will be senior for a few years, but over time it could end up being pretty jr IMO. It’s artificially senior in the sense that it was caused by the merger circumstances. Over time it won’t be that way, unless they drastically shrink it. LAX used to be very senior, but is now one of our most jr bases (narrow body FO that is). CLT used to be attainable in new hire class, it’s now very senior, it also won’t stay that way forever.

I bid out 2 vacancies ago. Went to FO 787 DFW. 6 years on property and was over 70% in PHX on the Bus as FO. Could be way way more senior in LAX, even CA IN PHL or LGA. Was getting either awful schedules or reserve with PBS. Figured if I am gonna be on reserve I might as well get paid more. Can hold LC on 787, so commute not a huge deal. PHX is great, but AA PBS and the schedule optimizer are a$$ho!es

Has there been any information from the company to support this? I'm currently seat locked on the 737 and would like to get back to PHX some day. I missed the day in pilot school where they handed out the crystal balls and I'm trying not incur another seat lock if I don't have to. Especially if it would not only let me live in base but potentially do so with higher relative seniority.
