As others have said. It certainly is possible but it’s not something that’s easy or even possible at all for the majority of us.
I don’t care to be watching my phone all the time or working undesirable trips. I use the LS auto trade and drop feature and occasionally(once or twice a week) check HISEQ. This should be enough but it isn’t. The company’s manning requirements are draconian AT THE VERY LEAST. Their flat out refusal to allow pilots to manipulate their schedule at all most certainly leads to more sick calls.
I refuse to use DOTC. It pretty much allows the company to do whatever they wish with your schedule. It blows my mind that people participate. On that note pilots working their days off for straight pay is truly mind boggling.

pilots LOSING days off for straight pay is mind boggling. Is this precise enough?
Im not talking about trading a 3 day for a 3 day on different days. This is very clearly implied by the rest of my post referencing LS and HISEQ…..cmon man.

My PBS awarded schedule never looks anything like what I actually fly. I aggressively trade/drop/pickup better trips as the more senior FOs try to drop everything… this cuts my days worked down drastically. Then, I use the dreaded DOTC (horrible user interface but whatever) process to pick up premium (and only premium) turns. I spend maybe 20 minutes total a day attempting to improve my schedule. There are some helpful tools (LiteSabre, for now) to do the work for you. Lots of people making a killing doing so. I don’t see anyone in DOTC for straight pay right now, they’d be morons with the amount of premium going out.
Living in domicile helps a lot. Not being extremely junior at a senior domicile (DFW, CLT) helps too.

As with everything, it’s very seniority and domicile/equipment specific. Junior people tend to get crappier trips, surprise. Those trips are considered crappy because X reasons, and thus they aren’t popular and are less likely to get picked up by other pilots if you post them. Longer 4-5 day trips, especially those that touch the weekends, are tougher to drop to open time as well. Better trips are easier to drop to other pilots or open time.

I’ve seen conflicting reports about OG trips booked on a DFP that goes into a RAP.
pilot bids PM only in DOTC on their last DFP before a RAP. Does crew scheduling break up the trip and they end up only flying on their DFP and start their RAP the next day? Or are they still letting (at company option) reserve pilots proffer OG PM trips that invade their rap?

One gem we lost to APA's global vision was the weight protection for the jumpseater. Your jumpseat was guaranteed, and a rev would be kicked off the flight before you were left behind.
Thanks APA! We really needed to get rid of that! (major effin sarcasm)
I want that back!

That being said, I’d love to have that, especially with the USAIR airbuses and the new passenger weights and the ACT issues on transcons.
