Nothing nefarious there. My technique as an FO was to have 121.5 in the number two standby position. After leaving ramps freq, I’d put it in the active position and turn the volume way down, then forget about it until after landing.

I think but not 100% sure, that company procedure is to monitor local company freq on #2 when able on the ground up to passing FL180 and then switch to 121.5....I could be wrong but I think that's it...

Default Thinking of a move...

I'm thinking of moving to AAL and I'd like some input. I've got an interview scheduled later this week.
I'm currently a 737 FO for UAL and I was hired in August. I really love it here and I think the company is great BUT I live about 1.5hrs west of DFW and I never plan on moving. The idea of driving to work rather than commuting is more appealing every time I commute out here to our junior base in SFO.
I'd be giving up about 700 in seniority that I've already gained and I'll be somewhere around 60% in SFO next month already. I haven't had any problems commuting and I love the company but I'm envious of the idea of driving myself to work and being able to sit reserve from home instead of a crashpad. Being with AAL in DFW would give me a lot more flexibility...at least that's what I think.
I've talked to lots of folks I know and I've gotten the full spectrum of answers from "you're crazy to give up seniority and the UAL contract to go to AAL" all the way to "living where you work is a game-changer and you'll never regret it".
Anything you have would be helpful. Benefits differences, pass travel, future contract prospects, Quality of life, DFW seniority...anything.
So...what say you?

you'd be living 1.5hrs away from our mega-base and HQ which isn't going away anytime soon if ever(hate to even type that). Being that close gives you alot of other opportunities to do other things then just be a line-pilot too, which over the course of a long career could be nice....contract, who knows, but it seams like the union and the company just agreed to some nice upgrades in negotiations, so hopefully the rest of it gets knocked out and we aren't so behind UAL and DAL...Seniority....well we have about 13,900 pilots I think, and we will retire like 10,500 of them over the next 20years....so hopefully you can do the math with your age and figure it out somewhat...living in base is such a huge trump card for me personally that it out weighs sooooooo many things....tough call though, good luck!

I would leave for AA asap. Living that close to DFW will give you the best QOL of any airline during your career. You can sit at home on reserve and either try to never get used or work the system and make good $. Bid the 737 which usually goes jr to the bus and enjoy the easy training. I credited over 200 hrs in my first month in DFW on the 737. With our retirements you’ll have plenty jr to you in just a year.
