to leave or not — SkyWest -> AA
#33
I’m around the same age as you (OP), and was in a very similar situation. I took the job and came to AA.
Someone made a point a few posts back that AA is more likely to be around long term than your regional. I came to the same conclusion.
You will see a ton of negativity on this forum, and AA needs a new Pilot contract soon. But it’s a night and day difference between a regional and a major and it’s been totally worth it.
I believe QOL is #1 and felt that I could be very happy either way, and so could you. But I also think you’d regret not taking the chance at the end of your career.

You'll get it in year 2 which is worth the pay raise.. is a good amount of cash to really think about.. especially since you'll be making 2x to 3x more than skywest in a few years. You'll be putting in almost 60k a year in your 401 in no time.. that's a real retirement.

first year aside, you will get what? 13 years or so of 16% direct contribution of your HIGHER income at AA....that will be significantly more than Skywest i assume...if you avg $200,000 in your time here(probably a low-ball figure too) that's $416,000...AA despite all the naysayers is better than a regional(I came from a regional, not a wholly owned).

Hoping to get some QOL insight from those who’ve been at AA for 1-5 years-ish. I’m a long timer (20 years) at SkyWest and am grateful to have been offered a job with AA. Ill soon be 50 and trying to weigh my options.
I know the money is there. Second year at AA I’d make more money than my annual income at SkyWest at 20+ year pay scale … crazy.
But how’s life? How are the pairings? How many days home are you getting? Are you able to swap and drop? Happy at AA?
Id love to see some anonymous monthly schedules and parings … maybe an email or private message? I know the questions are domicile/aircraft dependent but I’d probably be placed into CLT or MIA and obviously the 737 or 320.
Thanks in advance.

Depends if you’re awarded the 737. Am I right aa73 😝😝
(Then I wake up…) 😎
vitamin All joking aside… welcome to AA. You won’t regret your decision. Despite all the negativity this place is still leaps and bounds better than the regionals. 22 years here so far and have had way more fun than sorrow. Lots of stuff still needs fixing though. Overall a great group of pilots as you’ll soon find out. See ya on the line!
