nobody has the foggiest idea what influences class drops. I dont even think the company can reliably project them beyond a week or two.

No AA pilot has ever had success in finding the Wizard behind the curtain in charge of bids and vacancies and their awards.

Signed a 34 year old guy still trying to understand the system better

Welcome aboard!

Additionally, how are upgrade times trending? Specifically, for someone hired today will they see a significantly different upgrade time than those upgrading today/ two years ish ago?

There will be another one most likely accounced next week, with an effective date of 1 Sept. If you are just doing a base change, you may go a month or two before that. Depends on what they select as your date.

trending sub 2 years. Someone hired 2 years ago will have been hired early in this monster wave. Retirements have yet to peak and we are growing the fleet, for now. With that in mind, the time to upgrade will be similar, but the early 2022 guy will have much better seniority progression over their career

It all depends on personal preference. There is a high percentage that are bypassing for QOL, but the pay is pretty high now for Captains and getting higher every year.

In addition, there have been a few thousand "young" pilots hired in the last 3 years. It won't be long until all 3 legacy airlines start increasing times to upgrade. Reserve at AA isn't bad (if you live in base) and Captains make about $120 per hour more than FOs. So a Captain making 76 hours on reserve guarantee is about the same as an FO crediting 118 hours. Since premium has dried up in most bid statuses, it won't be surprising for more FOs to upgrade to Captain that have previously been bypassing.

If hired soon, I would expect upgrade to be in 2 years or less.

I think that's a seasonal thing. Once we ramp up for the spring/summer Premium will come back.
