This is my preferred method. Going direct to actually technically takes you off an arrival or airway, and re-cruising messes up speeds in the perf. Full to 3 back to full is the way to go!

These are training issues, but one has to be willing to learn.
Yes on the speedbrakes.

The disdain exists for unnecessary speedbrake use. Use them when you need them.

If you consistently want them when you don’t need them it shows a lack of situational awareness and/or understanding of the aircraft.

They exist for a reason. That reason is to correct for a high energy state. They don’t exist to make the fuselage rumble and vibrate unnecessarily. They don’t exist to give the engines something to fight against.

I have even seen speed brakes used in level cruise flight for an ATC speed reduction. I’m not kidding.

Which Boeing? None of the ones I flew would need it under those conditions.

I give the A32F just a little more room than I did that old 737-200. And on the 737-200 we had no idea what the wind was doing or exactly how far we were from the airport, unless it had a VOR on the field! ;-)

Okay I'll play... In the scenario depicted you have 40 miles (10 minutes @ 240 knots GS) to lose 5,000 feet? That's 500 fpm...I can't imagine 1) why you'd descend that far out, or 2) why you'd remotely consider using boards in this situation. Unless I'm completely misreading the question...

Or just as simple as reinserting an altimeter setting on the perf page. I don't like messing with flaps.

Doesn’t work on an AA bus.
