18Wheeler, thanks again for the reply. The benefits sound on par with what I pay for them now.

Default Southern Air

For all of thier faults Southern Air does take care of thier people on the road.
I know of at least three times that crewmembers have either fallen ill or been injured and the company did not hesitate to get them to a hospital and fly someone in to take the trip.
All of them are still with the company and have not suffered any repercussions for the disruptions.

18Wheeler: Thanks very much for spending your time and givng us the insight into Southern Air. I'm sure many of the questions we have, is something we would not like to discuss directly with the company representative. Many thanks again.

TACAMO: Have you heard about the some kind of Treaty that governs the Japanese Carriers to fly here in the United States? If you know, does it affect you at JALWays?

Thanks again

Are new hires on their own as far as getting out to Miami for training or does the company get them a ticket?

Thanks in advance!

Are your travel days to and from home included in the days off or days on?

Snoopy747: I think I know where you're going with this question. The Treaty is called the: 1953 Japan Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation (FCN) Treaty.

If I'm being a mind reader, your question is relating to the incident about the pilot incapcitation incident? You can read it on this site and others (google JalWays Lawsuit):

www.exodusnews.com/worldnews/world073.htm

I've heard two sides to this story, both with strong opposing views. Both the contract HACS Captain and FE got canned and when I was in the JAL Operations, I saw from the JAL Directory that the Japanese JAL Captain Hanami, did get promoted despite this. Funny, some of my Jalways colleagues sides with JAL mentioning that the two guys were loose cannons to begin with, while some of my JAL friends in Japan, thinks Hanami is a total Dick-Rash and doesn't surprise them one bit. I'm on the 74s, so I didn't understand too much of the on-goings with what went on inside the DC-10 fleet then.

I don't know exactly how this old postwar reconstruction 1953 Treaty is utlizied and enforced. I've tried to read it and understand it, and how it affects us as pilots, working for a Japanese carrier. We're hired on and the contract agreement is with the Contract Company (JALWays uses PARC, IASCO, HACS and WASINC), however, we're "badged" under the JAL/JCAB authority and certificate, therefore, no official jumpseat previledges here in the US. We do have some some previledges on Hawaiian Air and a couple of other carrier (I think in good faith). So as far as the Treaty goes and how this case was dismissed based on this, I'm not sure. Like any airline, it has it's good and bad. I believe, this case, was the absolute extreme.

By the way, I went to lunch the other day with my friend who also flew the TACAMO and now who flies the ANA Contract. He lives in Japan and relocated his family there. He and his family are really enjoying it. His kids are enrolled in a very good Private American School in Tokyo. With our Military previledge, there are several facilities we can use in Japan (Sanno Hotel and Yokota, Astugi's way out there). He told me that there is a excellent US style modern hospital (which operates in English) with good doctors near his home. His contract also pays him to fly back to the US once a month (if he chooses) and also has per diem to pay him to/from the airport (though he say's sometimes the monthly per diem for this, doesn't cover it). He gets at least a block of 8-9 days off in a row (commuters schedule) or requests a regular in-country schedule. The company he say's, is pretty tough and no bull-crap, but very fair. He says the only downside for them is the cost of living. The pays good and with the military retirement pay, it's still worth it and would do it again. He say's he'll defentely extend his contract.

He knows of the contract that you're contemplating about and thinks it still a good gig, despite the length of the contract. According to him, NCA is no longer operating under the umbrella of ANA as they divested their interest in them, so it'll open things up for you and should be secure for the long haul.

If there is any other questions about Contract Flying with a Japanese Carrier, let me know. Any questions Snoopy747 about living and flying in Japan, I'll ask my friend and get back to you. When's your decision going to be finalized between Southern or Contract flying?

Going out on a 4 day trip tomorrow but will have on-line access.

Default Halfbanks questions.

1. Southern Air pays for your ticket from home to Miami for training.
2. Travel days are considered part of you days on time. You will be paid per diem from the time you depart your home airport until you arrive back there.
All times are Z times for pay purposes.

TACAMO...Thanks for posting the information about the contract flying in Japan. I was wondering about that situation with the incapacitation and this Treaty. I wanted to ask about this Treaty, but how do you ask your contract hiring company about this without giving away your hand? Looks from you buddy with the ANA contract that all's well with living and flying in Japan, it comes to some sort of relief when I sign the contract.

Halfbanks...Good luck with your interview with Southern Air. I just got an call from them (C.G) this morning, that several slots have opened up and if I would reconsider and attend the interview this week. I politely declined and told her that I took another offer to fly overseas instead..."JOKINGLY" adding that using the "Aero Service" B-737-400 simluator - Ol' Sparky, for the sim-check was the main reason I declining the invitation (Yes, if I was really going to the interview or ever apply to Southern again, I would have never said that). She said that they would waive that portion for me, as they have already notified several other candidates. But I still declined with a chuckle. They must be "really-really" short of candidates, which means good news for you folks going to the interview. By the way, I stayed at the Comfort Inn on 36th Street for a couple of days near Aero Service a last year (in a pinch, you can walk there), they had a really cheap rate with a crew/military discount, downside, place is old, rooms kind of smelled and the van service is a bit unreliable on time (but they have airport pickup and to the sims, saves you the rental car), but for one night and the price is right, you might be able to gut it out. There's a couple of hotels on Fairway Drive near Aero Service which looked a lot better. Anyway...Good Luck!

Thanks again 18wheeler for the quick reply. Looks as if all the flights are over sold to Miami and so the adventure begins!

Hey, TACAMO, have you flown with Stu Holmes? He left us years ago to go in as a direct entry captain on the 747. How long does it take to upgrade? I thought it was a very long time last I heard a few years ago.
