Many posters have alluded to it....

I never said ALL of them should have weapons, but as my earlier post stated I have NO problem with those with military/LEO background being armed after stringent background checks/training.

Making them (any of them) into law enforcement would be at odds with their regulatory duties and the “administrative searches” they perform. Administrative Searches as defined by current law do not require a search warrant, nor should they, because TSA agents have no interest in criminal activities. Their duty is to safeguard civil aviation assets and those who use them. This does NOT require a firearm.

It would be interesting to count the number of firearms carried by law enforcement officers at a typical large airport already. I'm guessing the figure would be in the low hundreds.

These are the requirements of getting a job for the TSA:

a background investigation, including a credit and criminal check
a drug screening and medical evaluation
no debt defaults of $7,500 or more (except for some bankruptcies)
no delinquent federal or state taxes or past-due child support payments
males must be registered for Selective Service
must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national at time of application
must be at least 18 at the time of application
must be English proficient
must have a high-school diploma, a GED –or – “at least one year of full-time work experience in the security industry, aviation screening, or as an X-ray technician.”

There are more stringent requirements to pump gas or flip burgers let alone be an armed federal agent. The FBI process for example requires background investigations, character references, lie detector tests etc. I doubt many TSA personnel could get a state issued CCW if they tried.

Anyone who has flown in the past decade or so has no doubt seen first hand many examples of bullying, abuse of power, improper touching, harassment, unprofessionalism and the like, at the hands of TSA personnel. Are these glorified mall cops really the kind of people you feel comfortable having a badge AND gun?
I was a pawn in the burger war and I never had to meet any of those standards. I don’t think a gas pumper does either. You’ve overplayed your point my friend. Sound like these TSA folks are screened just about as well as airline pilots.

I have no problem with those particular folks having weapons, I just don't want to pay for it. Federal cops are very expensive.

Now if they want to do it FFDO style, where it's non-paid I'd be OK with a little taxpayers support for that. Doubt the government employee unions would go for it though.

But there's also the issue of an armed guy being distracted while stacking tubs or whatever and losing control of his weapon. Are we going to have pay for even MORE people to stand around and do even less work than regular smurfs?
