The last time in 20 years I had a total GPS failure.....never. But if I had, one pilot on the flight deck would have been sufficient to handle it...thanks to automation and redundancy (3) IRU's

We may wish to maintain the status quo, but our wishes will be overcome by technology and market forces...Just ask old Frontier pilots, or former UAL 737 second officers.
What happens in a "miracle on the Hudson" scenario?

How about Sioux City? All hydraulics lost and pilot skill saved most of the people.

What about suicidal pilots? How about suicidal remote operators?

What about EVERYTHING we've learned from CRM over the last 40 years? Are we just going to throw all that away?

LOTS of problems other than technology issues.

Not exactly a good example to use because good AI wouldn't have taken 40 seconds to make a decision. But we are decades from having AI that good.

Its a perfect example. The humans saved everyone. Who knows what the AI would have done. I’ll fly in an AI driven plane once my iPhone can go 10 years without restarting on its own.

Going from 4 engines to 3 engines is economical. Going from 3 engines to 2 engines is even more economical. Going from 2 engines to 1 engine is just stupid. The same can be said for pilots....

Best thing I've read in while here. Succinct.

Swing and a miss.

Do ETOPS much? We're good for 3 hours on a single engine over the ocean or the Amazon...at night that's longer than the average state length for domestic ops.

Egypt Air, German Wings, JAL350, Silk Air, all pilot suicides with 2 or 3 pilots on board, and now maybe MH370.

No one is throwing anything away, cept maybe you.

CRM has taught us that most accidents are the result of human error, not the technology, hence the old joke about the single pilot and the dog.

Welcome to the 21st century. Sorry if it doesn't fit your style.

Drones oh gawd, the fighter pilots in the 70's just howled at the idea of a drone strike.. there would be missles going everywhere, airframes crashing into schools, "It will never happen" Know what percentage of AF pilots graduating get assigned to drones? HA

The study will happen... the crew complement will change in spite of some guy with a juvenile avatar dredging up all the old failed arguments of the last 6 decades for changes in technology and crew complement.

All of your example imply NO onboard pilot complement. This discussion is about single pilot ops. Try to keep up.

Drones?! Drones crash all the time. I just hope we aren’t the first airline stupid enough to buy a bunch of passenger drones and start killing passengers with them.

I think when it can be shown that a single pilot operation is an improvement in safety we will go that route. Not before.

But think about if the aircraft can be controlled from the ground, it can be hacked. Mass 9/11 style attack, all done remotely?
