Since then, we have had an all volunteer military. As for the idea of Vietnam stopping the spread of communism... well, communism is alive and well on just about every college campus in 2022, so that was an epic fail.

No kidding. Just received a copy of

“ The Doomsday Machine: Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner” by Daniel Ellsberg.

Came out a few years ago. Supposedly a written by a whistleblower who did nuclear war/think tank stuff starting back in the 1950’s up until recently.

Seems topical.

Jared Diamond of Guns Germs and Steel fame had a good chapter in his follow up book:

Unique language and culture, unity during/after the Winter War, awareness that maintaining close economic ties with the USSR even if the west was better, and refusing to join NATO all played a part in not just their survival, but ability to thrive in a tough spot.

IDK. Times change. If the US “pivots to Asia”, NATO is going to be second tier.

Remember "freedom fries" and how stupid that was? Same thing is going on here.

Also, re the part about the insurgency. Ukraine is already destroyed. A lot of Ukrainians will be given refugee status in the U.S. and other western countries, and they are certainly deserving. Their government's policy of not allowing males 14-60 is going to destroy families. A 14 year old is still a kid. A lot of those men are most likely fathers. The excuse you gave for forcing people to join a theoretical insurgency is pure non-sense. A free and democratic government wouldn't force anyone to stay in the country and a fight a war they may not want to participate in. This wasn't the doing of any Ukrainian or Russian citizens. It was the doing of corrupt governments and profiteers in the Russian, Ukrainian, and U.S. governments.
plenty of people were against invasion of Iraq including myself from day 1. Your use of false equivalencies and gross generalization is weak. Declaring Ukraine a lost cause after 7 days is asinine. You know what destroys families? Russian invasion and forced migration. This isn’t politics you clown, this the outright theft of an entire country and the continuation of the soviet attempt to wipe Ukrainian culture from existence.

Of course the anit-war movement during the Viet Nam conflict led to the end of the draft. AND, the US will never have another draft because, as you said, "A free and democratic government wouldn't force anyone to stay in the country and a fight a war they may not want to participate in."

Russia just banned Facebook. I wish the entire world would so some of you can get out of your propaganda news chambers of false equivalencies and conspiracy theories.

Again, I'm not agreeing with Putin, or saying that he is a good guy. I'm just stating the realities of why things went the way they went.

Great book by Daniel Ellsberg.
Some very interesting stuff regarding what our Nuclear Weapons protocol was, at least through the early 60's. Kind of made a mockery of all the talk about tactical nukes being used to stop a Soviet invasion of Europe.
I was somewhat surprised at how little he wrote about Nuclear Winter.

Censorship in Russia of information that the Russian government doesn't like is bad, but I would support worldwide censorship of information that I don't like. That's basically what you just said.

Not what he said. People have a discussion based on facts and giving their opinion is much different than yelling past each other based on pure BS they are parroting from some troll farm on FB.

FB is as bad for our adults as it is our children. It’s ruining multiple generations all at once. Much worse than anything we’ve seen
