It wasn't cheap, but probably the best thing I did, besides interview prep. Within a month I got an invite to interview from targeted major. There weren't even that many tweaks, but his insights gave me a lot of confidence that my product was as perfect as possible.

What's to check that you couldn't check yourself? Have the apps changed that much? Name, times, types, work history etc. Why do you need an outside source to check them. At the most have a fellow pilot look it over. Maybe I'm just getting old. Haven't done an app/interview since 1999. Is there a college like essay you have to write these days??? W T F, paying to have your app checked - not on my ship sister.

In all seriousness, at the very least get a trusted friend or two look over a printed out version. Similar to writing a paper you'll never catch all of your own mistakes. Punctuation, spelling, common formatting, etc. all matter these days on apps like it or not. Plus certain boxes need 'something' in them for the computers such as an 'NA' or a date you might have thought didn't apply.
Case in point, I hadn't put in my ATP written date as it was years ago and since I had my ATP thought it didn't matter. Well, it does. Throw it in there. You can call the FAA (took 2 minutes) and get the date if you lost your report.

It just isn't as simple as you are making it out to be.
I had the luxury of being in a military squadron with a dozen or so guys who were all going through the application process at the same time, and we all reviewed each others' paperwork and suggested improvements. Some guys had paid app review, and the rest of us would take those lessons and try and apply them to our individual apps and resumes.
I honed my own paperwork for a year or so using this method, and then finally decided to pay for a personal review.
I had two different well known prep companies do resume and application review for me, and -- surprise! -- despite my previous attempts to learn from my buddies and pick up all their tricks, the two companies I paid each caught different things (some mistakes, some improvements to written sections) that were mostly very helpful improvements.
I didn't find it a "scam" in any way whatsoever. Although I liked one company a little better than the other, they both provided specific advice tailored directly to my own stuff.
Money well spent in my opinion.
