Time building question
New pilot, with about 150hrs and PPL/IFR. I have unlimited access to an Archer. Would it be looked down upon by a regional to build hours to ATP mins in your own plane vs. building hours as a cfi?

You know you are looking at over 40k in fuel costs alone right ?
To answer your questions most regionals won't care has been the consensus. Make sure you can prove the time and sell them on passing their training having only had experience in a single engine piston

Looked down on? No. Most regionals currently can’t afford to be that picky. But additional ratings (CFI, CFII, MEI) will certainly help you at the major level.

20 years ago regionals would prefer folks who built time in a professional capacity.
Today they can't be that picky, not even close.
Majors don't give a shiate either way about piston time.

Keep the following in mind.
Building time on your own is unsupervised time.
With CFI/CFII/MEI there is a requirement to perform to a standard otherwise you’re not going to be very popular with your students, Chief flight instructor and the school owner.
This applies to every aviation job by the way.
There are also records of your performance and of your flight time.
I still have the printed flight time records from the last flightschool I worked for.
Same with any entry level job.
If I were a recruiter and I would ask you to show me the hours in your logbook are legit and not kitchen table time what would you do?
Flying “your own” hours there is also very little incentive to better yourself and challenge yourself.
You’re more likely to do the same hour over and over again.

I will say this, you may have trouble getting into some of the top tier Regionals if you time build that way. It is all going to depend on whether they have the hiring doors open or not. If they do, you may be considered. If not, you will probably get the TBNT letter.
