College Degree
#21
I sent the request for an exemption a couple of days ago. The local FSDO tells me it will probably take three months to get a response. Only time will tell...
P.S. What carrier were you in class for? And on what equipment (if applicable)?

There are some really good responses to this thread and I agree with them. What you have to keep in mind is the competitive environment. Experience does have it's value, but what if you are competing with someone of equivalent experience and they have a college degree?
The reality is that the airlines can, and will, choose what they perceive to be "cream of the crop." They will first screen applicants based on the tangibles in their resume or application. So... stack the deck if you can - get the degree so they can't scrap you before they even meet you...

So I go to the University of Florida (freshmen), and I've decided that I want to be a pilot. Unfortunately, UF doesn't have an actual aviation degree, so what would be some choices for a major? Aeronautical or Aerospace Engineering? Something else? Any feedback very much appreciated.

Thanks for your suggestion, but I actually still plan on being a pilot, I just wanted to see what major I should choose that would be the most helpful in becoming/getting a job as a pilot. Some other forums have said that Majoring in Aerospace Engineering and Minoring in Meteorology would be my best choice. This is, of course, in addition to actual pilot training. Again, thanks for any advice!

Choose anything unrelated to flying. Get a teaching degree or something you can do if you lose the flying job. They don't care what your degree is in, just so you can fill in the box. They may even find it more interesting in the interview and consider you more well rounded. Still, just get the degree. Get the ratings when you can...they are the easy part.

Really? That's great to know, and I guess I'll be going exploratory for a little while! Thanks for the quick responses, VERY much appreciated... this whole choosing a major thing has been really bothering me for a while, and you guys are really helping me out.

Like someone said get a non-aviation degree which will allow you a backup career plan. Actually aero engineering would be fine as a backup too...manufacturing has cycles but they are not connected to pilot hiring/firing cycles. Just avoid the "Aviation Science" type degrees which give you a large core credit towards your degree based on flight training. Flight training is really vocational, not higher education...kind of like having a BS in welding or truck driving.

With that said, like others have mentioned, try to find something that interests you outside of aviation. You will be doing yourself a favor in the long run. Best of luck!

Lol, yeah that probably would have been the logical thing to do, but, luckily, it seems like that would have been a bad choice to limit my education to flying, so I guess it's all working out all right. Thanks again for all your responses!
