Default ATP with low airplane time

I'm in the unusual situation of coming up on ATP minimums and working towards getting my ATP. The unusual part of it, about 1/3 of the 1500 hours required are going to be airplane time, with the rest in airships.

My question is this, how realistic is it to want to leave my current airship job and move over to a regional 121 gig? Is it something that I'll be able to do or am I going to need a chunk more of airplane time?

Some regionals will credit some helo or gilder time towards their mins, but I've never heard of any credit for airship time. Start googling their web sites, they will spell out their requirements there.

But I doubt you'll have any luck..airship flying is fundamentally different than airplane stick and rudder flying, so you're basically similar to a wet commercial airplane pilot as far as stick-and-rudder experience goes.

But when you do get the required time, I'm sure your airship experience will weigh favorably as a soft factor.

No doubt. But then again, the credit that some give for helo time and glider time is for time that is nowhere near the same as flying an airplane.

Realistically, I can't make a move for a bit, and when I can, will be right around the ATP for 121 operations takes effect. My hope is that it pushes some weight into my corner, as for having a ATP certificate.

I've driven large ships, helos, and airplanes. I've always been interested in airships and while I'm not rated I would consider airship time closer to ship driving than airplane flying in many regards.

Helo time is typically pro-rated 2-for-1 (ie 2 helo hours = one hour FW credit, up to some max).

I would argue that having some glider time is even better than FW airplane time as far as stick-and-rudder skills.

So your recommendation would be to bail on the job and find a "real" flying job ASAP then?

I would keep the job for now, unless you hate it.

I don't "hate it" but I certainly don't enjoy it much. Absolutely no QOL to speak of. 330+ nights a year in a hotel, no duty or flight time regulations. On the flip side, I was able to get my student loan debt paid down quickly.

I'd like to be back in the airplane world within a year. It may not be realistic to try to go straight to 121, but perhaps a 135 cargo gig might not be too far from.

Sounds your schedule would not allow you to CFI on the side to build time?

Check 135 regs, do their total time requirements allow non-airplane time for FW job?

No, we are never in 1 place more than a few days, and as such, trying to do some CFI stuff on the side isn't a viable option, unfortunately. As for 135 regs, there is nothing that says, within the regulations, that flight time for 135 IFR PIC minimums has to be fixed wing. Now if a company will take the time is another question.

IMO having a situation a lot like yours I think you will be ok finding a FW job as long as you are FW current. The only hang up may be that some places want 100 hours in the past so many months. So that may bite you. I think regionals will be accepting "any" time for TT soon and will only have a multi requirement. Also if you get your ATP MEL then start applying I would bet that you will get plenty of bites. Good Luck!

Off topic but did you happen to be flying over North Georgia this past weekend? I saw an airship this weekend humming along and thought of you from this forum and JC. I think it was a Directv ship.
