Opinions- 135 vs. 121 jobs
#21
To the OP - do you have a family or any financial obligations that you need to consider? Would it be a big deal to just up and move to a large regional base and live on the cheap for a couple of years?
Here's what worries me about the King Air gig - it's a startup. Almost everyone starts a 135 company with the best of intentions. Then over time, the financial pressures make the QOL head south, and in a couple of years it's just another crappy 135 outfit. That's if the damned thing even stays in business.

This is an interesting point. I think JetBlue and Spirit are options with just 135 turboprop time, but the legacies might be more problematic.

I'd do the 135 thing if it pays well and gives you a schedule you want.
That's what I did until I hit 5000 tt and then applied to some airlines I wanted to work for. I had 1500 pic jet (all light Ga aircraft). I chose the 135 route vs. the 121 regional route. It payed more in the beginning and it offered more at the time to me (qol).

Pretty sure if you look at most of the guys hired recently at these places the vast majority are previous 121. Im not saying its impossible but i know Spirit has openly said at job fairs that they will "look" at 135/91 guys but they want 121 experience. Even Compass wants and is getting a lot of previous 121 folks.

In case anyone is wondering why most regional jobs come with a lousy schedule and even worse pay and benefit packages today, it is because of a new lowering of the bar in the 1990's yesterday by people who were willing to pay someone for a job.

At your age, I'd be getting over to a 121 carrier ASAP and knock out that degree. Forget the possible QOL of some 135 King Air deal... You need to set yourself up for lifetime QOL, and that is going to be doing whatever it takes to get to a Legacy carrier in the next few years. Start looking at regionals with quick upgrades... Compass, Commutair, etc.

You will get an interview with your times. Be prepared to explain why you left 121 before.
But I would still consider staying where you're at to get your 1000 TPIC knocked out. Combined with 121 RJ experience, that might but you over the top. Upgrades at SKW might be many years, especially if we lose a lot of 50-seaters over the next few years.
