Past checkride failures always seem to be something pilots are worried about answering, but it's quite honestly one of the easiest questions to answer. We always get excited talking with our clients about this situation.
Everyone has past black marks... who cares! Admit your mistake, take responsibility and don't play the blame game.
Tell the airline what you kearned, how you've applied it moving forward, and how you plan on never failing a checkride ever again because you've understood over the years how important training is... This is, of course, a nutshell version.
