Default Aviation Related Coursework

Hey guys-new here. Looking to completely switch careers. Got about 950 hours but have been out of aviation for quite some time. I do have a bachelor's degree but I was wondering what is considered aviation coursework? Would love to qualify for that 1000 hour ATP. Thanks so much!

Approved list of schools here.

And just because you got an aviation degree from an approved school in the past doesn't mean that you'll qualify for the 1,000 hour R-ATP. I got my degree back in 2005 and after contacting my university and getting the certificate needed to prove that I qualified for it, it showed that I only had enough qualifying credit hours for the 1,250 hour R-ATP even though I got a 4 year degree. Since the whole R-ATP thing didn't exist back then, they couldn't tailor the courses to meet the requirements that the FAA laid out for the R-ATP, and apparently they're pretty strict on what a course must contain for it to qualify.

Just putting that info out there since it caught me by surprise.

Everyone needs to have it now, run before they walk, put the cart ahead of the horse.

Thousand hours? Go get a job, pick up the additional hours, currency, and experience. Like most of us have done.

Why is it always a race to the bottom? How can I get away with less experience, less training, less qualification, and get it all now?

Agreed. Another 500 hours isn't going to hurt. Go instruct/split time/wash planes. Should only take a few months.

Maybe because there is much fewer job opportunities for the 250-1500hr crowd than in the past. Not to mention the total lack of consistent income. They don't let all the vets cash in their GI benefits at the local flight school anymore nor does anyone fly checks. Where did that $6/hr T34 go? Things are a lot different now.

You paid six dollars an hour for a T-34? Be truthful.

Thirty years ago that couldn't be had.

Get out there and fly powerlines. Do 135 VFR. Fly jumpers. Flight instruct.

The opportunities are there. One may have to lift a finger to help himself, but the opportunities are most certainly there. No less today than yesterday.

Actually, there were many more opportunities for fresh commercials in the past. Now opportunities are much fewer and always much farther away. The cheap T34 was at a base club in 1966, a little before my time but so were Cadillac a month wages. Im not saying it cant be gone, just asking if its really worth it.

Thanks guys...my issue is I'm changing careers and I've got 2 kids so I'm looking to get with a regional so I can get benefits and a livable wage of some sort. Flight instructing doesn't really pay the bills.
