I once had my FO wet his pants when I was taxiing my venerable DC8 down the old SEL cargo ramp, and I said "too bad there's no money in freight" to a higher level UPS non-pilot bean-counting mangler sitting in my jumpseat.

It's a visual joke, the SEL cargo ramp was COVERED in 747-400s and MD11s. My long narrow-body douglo-saurus looked tiny...

How is it before you get to the "major cargo" level as in some kinda feeder, say Mountain Air???? Also, what does home based mean? I tend to see that on a lot of cargo places.

Home based usually means that your "Domicile" is your home or the closest major airport to your house. When the company needs you to work, whether your on reserve or starting your line, they pay your way to where you need to be. No worries about missing a jumpseat or finding your own way to a Domicile and no need for crashpads. Better than sliced bread. Also in most cases, when your home based, the minute you walk out your front door the perdiem starts, and stops when you return home. Gotta agree with Check 6, no hats is a good thing.

Hmm, I could have swore that FredEx operated under 121 supp rules and Ops Specs. I don't work there so I am not 100% sure

Yes,

FedEx is governed by FAR Part 121 Supplemental, however we are considered a scheduled air carrier by our ops specs. At some point in the future I would expect to see a change to 121 Flag Air Carrier rules.

There are ops spec for everything which give you relief from the basic 121 regulations. F9 flies to mexico under 121 domestic. Alaska under 121 Flag and then we perform charters under 121 supplmental but basically we only have a 121 domestic certificate. POIs cant even figure it out- they all will give you a different answer on what is 121 subpart Q, S and R.

The main difference is with the type of airman certificate one posseses. For the passenger carriers one only needs an ATP. For cargo one must possess an ATP which is stamped "Cargo Only". There is no major difference between the two other than a simple psychological profile and examination.
