If offered a job, should I leave a “Big Three” major for FedEx or UPS?
Five years at a major, likely going to be furloughed. Passenger traffic forecasted to return to pre-CV levels in 2022/23. FedEx and UPS are both hiring, and cargo seems very immune to the typical calamities that torpedo AA/DL/UA, especially in a social distancing Amazon-dominated world.
I left WN off the list because they planned for a rainy day and will likely survive this.
Will be applying to FedEx and UPS this weekend.

To directly answer your question...Go with your gut b/c only “you” know you and/or your family’s personal situation during these times.
As for Brown...HR has hired previously furloughed pilots from Majors in the past. So it’s definitely still possible.
The uphill climb is going to be that Brown has been “burned” (for lack of a better word) by the post 9/11 furloughed pilots when after a few years...the recalls started, they quit Brown and returned to the Airline with which they still had a seniority number.
Agin, it’s not going to be impossible to get hired here, however, with the current environment shaping up and the past experiences, things might be difficult for furloughed mainline folks with line numbers.
Having said all that...it’s a proven fact that you will always miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. So if you’d like to join us trash haul’n crowd and it’s calling your name...go for it!
...In the end...with 5 years seniority, hopefully you can ride out this storm and not go through a furlough.
Best of luck!

Exactly my thinking. Go look at his post history. He appears to be a very bitter NetJets guy who most likely got turned down by FedEx. What a sorry soul he appears to be. Hopefully he gets help.

Cargo doesn't give your family travel benefits, something to consider if you use that. It seams most of my flying at an ACMI is during daylight hours, but changing 6+ time zones, it is irrelevant. Every year around Christmas, I get to experience UPS and Fed Ex domestic flying schedules and I can honestly say I hate all of them. Definently the worst flying I do at my ACMI. Go Fed Ex and UPS for the money, go international ACMI for the better and more interesting flying. I've done pax flying, never again. Never flew for a major, don't care. The pax mission I hate as much as I hate the public, the smurfs, gate agents, non-reving, paying for hotels, flying in a day early, etc. There's always a few good FA's, but the majority of them only serve to add drama to your job.
Pax flying is affected greatly by socio/economic natural/man made conditions. Where I work, when the economy is doing great, so am I. When the crap hits the fan, I do even better. When things go bad for cargo/acmi, pax will soon follow.
It's all a crap shoot, make a decision and get lucky!!

If any concessions are made at the Pax carriers, then making enough money will be an issue. Hopefully it won’t come to that. Hire at FedEx/UPS and you just buy the ticket and enjoy the ride - No worries.

Mmmmmmm, positive space ticket - delicious. Pass on the AssPass. Truly an overblown benefit as overbooking made things sketchy at best. Maybe no more overbooking for awhile (doubtful, the illusion of full flights is based on the constriction of available flights), but as Pipe mentioned not a game changer for decision making purposes by any means.

Definitely beats most of my non-revving days. That said, my non-revving was always as a RJ guy. So I was always very far down on priority. No doubt it's quite a bit better as a mainline employee.

Pretty sure Fedex is in same boat, UPS applications on file have increased exponentially, heard from multiple sources 30,000+. And this is to hire around 250-300 a year. It would appear you need something special to stand out or someone pulling hard for you inside.

As someone who left a major after four years and transferred to FedEx, my advice would be to apply ASAP but slow your roll. Five years in with your company is a lot of time. Things will return to normal in 1-2 years.
I left the majors because I was allergic to major / passenger airline type of work and crowded airports.
Unless you get the feeling that you're going to be furloughed for several years, I'd stay put.

5 years is a lot of seniority to give up. There is no guarantee that any company will be here in another 5-10 years. Passenger carriers are suffering now due to public fear and government intervention. What happens if you bail for a cargo carrier that gets pushed out in a traditional way by another company like Amazon? What happens if a disruptive technology like drones makes it cheaper to cut out big airplanes? At the end of the day these are questions only you can answer to make the best decision you can and never look back.
