Whilst site-seeing in Shanghai, we were approached by 3 friendly young Chinese 'students' who said they were also visiting Shanghai from Xi'an.
They asked us questions about our home country, (England) and we chatted for a while. They then said they were planning to visit a tea house to find out about traditional Chinese tea/ tea ceremony and would we join them as they wanted to practice their English. Against our better judgement we decided to go with them. To cut a long story short, our politeness cost us over 200 RMB for two thimble sized cups of tea. We felt so stupid, but somehow fell for it as they appeared to pay up for their tea too. What was happening was that they were getting paid commission by the tea house for conning unsuspecting tourists inside. We saw other tourists being led into these places by groups of young Chinese people.
If visiting China's cities, be wary of these groups trying to befriend you. They use many different techniques.
At least when similar happened to me in the Reeperbahn, I got a beer, half a small bottle of champagne and hot chick rubbing my leg - until the bill came via a giant german dude acting as bouncer/enforcer!

Default The tea got me!

The tea ceremony got me for USD $189 in Shainghai. It is exactly as described in the above posts. I feel really stupid, but this lesson may save me thousands over the next 28 years. Be careful out there.

Default Current converters

Do we stay anywhere that I need to buy one of those current converters for the wall plugs in order to charge phones, computers, etc?

If you a buy an international travel plug set it will probably come with a converter as well. Your biggest problem is if you have any 3 pronged plugs, as most outlets only have two. That is easily fixed by putting in a two prong adapter and letting the ground just stick out. That all being said, I use the adapters all the time, but have never used the converter. That may explain why my laptop charger quit.

Most hotels seem to have at least one USA-style plug or adapter in the room, if they don't you can usually get one from the front desk.

More importantly, you need to buy/rig an adapter for the cockpit if you're going to the Maddog. That way you can use your laptop to accesss important company information that may be stored on said laptop.

That's the one piece of equipment I haven't been able to locate yet. Where did you get yours?
