Then you should have added..."heck what do I know - they might even let some 'old' over 60 guys stay in the left seat for an additional 5 years or so. If that happens, I sure hope they get switched to the FO pay scale because obviously they shouldn’t worry about fo rates since they’ve been captains way too long.”

So 69+33+29= 131
Shaggy and I are on the same page now, and after correcting my data, we have about the same numbers. However, I have sorted my data by birth year instead of birth date, and have included retirements, medicals, and PFE's into my mix.

I assume a November 1st effective date for age 65, and a vacancy bid effective date of January 1, 2008. Thus, those born in 1945, 1946 and 1947 would be eligible for upgrade based upon a 2-year cutoff (age 63 or younger).

Pilots presently on the UPS seniority list:

Birth year
1945 - 30
1946 - 51
1947 – 73 (includes 22 Nov/Dec birthdays who may stay up front if age-65 effective Nov. 1st)

Total - 154

Minus:
9 pending retirements
About 20 long-term medicals (this number is always changing)

Rough estimate re-upping – 125 with Nov/Dec included, 103 without Nov/Dec

I think maybe Nov. 1st 2009. With Marion retiring and bigger issues than winey old pilots, this thing is way off in the horizon. And the Congress goes home in two months. Then we have an election year in 2008. And the APA, AMR, and the ATA have not lobbied for this. Especially the ATA. Sorry Old Farts, time to enjoy your retirement and not work.

Question

Has anyone done a similar number comparison for our purple friends? They must have a much larger number of FEs but of course they have more pilots so maybe percentage wise it'll be the same as here? I think they got quite a few 727s and some DC10s (the way I understand it a DC10 does have an engineer but an MD10 does not, correct?)

Normally, if I am catching a free ride, I don't try to get in an argument with the captain, but I couldn't keep my mouth shut. I wasn't rude or anything but I said "Well, I don't agree. i bet this was one of those "senior" types that argue that it is an advantage for the FO's to have the age 60 rule changed to allow the senior much more experienced captain to continue-

They'll be dead within a couple of years after quitting. there won't be much "retirement".

Doing the night sort for 20 years, I think you might be right. And this is exactly what thet want. This is why we have no lump-sum option for our A-plan. They know the numbers.
