I know of an "airline" putting 23 and 24 year olds in heavies and flying them into combat zones at night on NVG's.....its called the military.....too much is being made about the young guys flying International..after 2 trips its no big deal. Just have to do your homework!

Not too long ago, I had the FAA on the jumpseat from the west coast. The problem, according to him is not putting new hires or 23 24 year olds in the right seat, it is the POTENTIAL of having a captain and FO that are not that experienced. This is why the feds went to UPS and told them to either hire experienced FO's or risk having things grind to a halt with ramp checks and line checks on a daily basis.

Oh, we are putting new hires in the whale. Nobody else will bid it.

Maybe people would bid it if the lines didn't suck like the MD11 ANC lines.

Or maybe if you didn't have to go to ANC to fly it.

Aggie,
Unless things have changed in the last couple of years, the heavy guys in the military don't get drugs to fly. Heavy guys only got Ambien to sleep. That will work as long as you know when you have to show up for your flight. It's worthless if you are sitting on alert.

McBoeing Bus,

You are correct about the Ambien, and I agree with freightpuppy, If the scheds didn't suck and even a few scheds started in SDF there would be alot of senior pukes heading to the 747-4 and MD-11

No offense, but most of the newbies going to ANC are previously typed in the 747 or MD11 and were Capts at other airlines (yes there are jobs a lot crappier than UPS) or something equivilant from the military (C17/KC10, etc).

Hence many of the newbies are going to ANC not by choice but for the needs of the company and by the "suggestion" of the FAA.

I'm not sure I follow the logic that bringing the -400 to Louisville would make the FAA happier from a safety standpoint.

Isn't the point to not have them parked but keep them flying?

Good point! Regardless of where they do the scheduled maintenance, having the crews in ANC (and supplemented in SDF) makes good sense.
