Thank you.
fdx727,
I deserve the critique about not knowing who could vote for what. But as a young SO it didn't really matter until just recently.
But as far as issues, LOA and other things I have more knowledge than some of the more "senior" and well versed crewmembers I fly with. I have gently educated more than a handful on what the STV stuff actually says. They also ask me about the upcoming trip rig.
Should I make fun of their ignorance too?

I would if my Capt knew less about the contract than I, as a newbie did. But then, being your typical pilot, I'm a sarcastic SOB. And I would think with all that's gone on in the last year, any member coming off probation would make a special effort to determine his voting status, so he/she would be ready to cast their votes properly when given the opportunity. And about the "sucks," you just never seem to have a happy post. You need to relax and enjoy this job a little bit. For all our problems, it beats the hell out of my last two airline jobs.

Very true. It seems I only post when I have negative thoughts to express. Not the best manners on my part.
I can complain all day on airlinepilotforums but I still believe I have the best job in the biz. Room for improvement, but a very good job.
Cheers.

Aaron, Great news!!! Sorry I'm not in your LEC so I can't vote for you. I really hope you make it. Vic Liberti is running for block 2 rep. Here is his letter.
Fellow Local Council 22 Members,
I am running for Block 2, Local Council 22 Representative, and am seeking your support and nomination.
On October 26(?) at the Local Council 22 special meeting, nominations will be held for officers (Blocks 2,5 and 7) to represent you on the MEC. Captain Mike Arcamuzi has decided to step down as Block 2 representative. I want to publicly acknowledge and thank Mike for his years of selfless service to our Council and the crew force in general. After much thought with trusted friends and family members I have decided to seek the nomination of Block 2 representative The pilot representatives chosen now by the crew force in this election will lead us into the next contract. Additionally, these representatives will elect new MEC officers in the Spring of 2009, over see committees, enforce the current contract and attend to the multitude of daily union activities.
Although I have never run for an elected position, my union experience and service span over a decade. I have served as regional coordinator for both New York and Miami Strategic Preparedness Committee (SPC) under both ALPA 1 and 2. I have also served as a member of the Pilot to Pilot Committee.
I believe and understand that there are three roles of a Local Council Block representative. First, to represent the block and the council, second , to be a Master Executive Council member and thereby to represent the interests of the FedEx pilots, and lastly as a member of the ALPA Board of Directors which essentially oversees the interests and well-being of our great Association and its 75 years of history..
Although perceived by many as the best contract in the industry I believe there is much room for improvement in our current collective bargaining agreement, especially in work rules and retirement. I believe the Optimizer is here to stay and will continually be cranked up by the company if we allow it. This must be addressed hopefully with an LOA, but certainly in the next contract to preserve quality of life as we know it. Retirement A plans are a target of management in all industries, but specifically in the airline industry. ( US Airways, Delta and UAL have had their A-plans terminated in recent years and NMAB and CAL have had there’s frozen). It is a matter of time before management comes after ours as they did with all other employees. It is imperative that we protect our A plan for our older members while at the same time build flexibility for our younger members to maximize there B plans in the event of a disaster (Take over, bankruptcy, etc.)
Change is inevitable, but as pilots we all fear change. That is why I believe there a need for improvement in communications. I will promise to keep the Local Council members informed on the daily operations through bi-monthly letters. I also believe Pilot to Pilot needs to be expanded so that the membership gets both correct and timely information. I would also like to see Professional Standards strengthened so that we can police our own problems and minimize management discipline issues.
In summary, there are many issues affecting the pilot force some of which I’ve addressed in this letter. I ask you for your support and also commit to run for a second term if elected, to keep the MEC intact through negotiations of the next contract.
Fraternally,
Victor Liberti
