Default UPS-Any speculation????????

If HR 4343 passes (which looks pretty inevitable at this point ), what kind of impact is it likely to have in terms of future hiring for UPS? I realize it pretty much guarantees that there will be little or no hiring in 2008, but how about beyond? Just wondering how many of the over 60 crowd are hanging out as F/E's and how will it likely work for them to get back up front?

I'm sure there will be a lot of differing opinions, and most of it will be pure speculation, but I'm curious how everyone thinks it will likely shake out.

There are 157 pilots between 60-65 on the seniority list. They could all bid back to the front seats as the classic airplanes get phased out.

There are 280ish pilots between the ages of 55-60 on the seniority list that will not be required to retire until 65 now instead of 60.

I don't think it looks good for upgrades or hiring for the next few years if this passes - as it seems to be exected now.

This may affect those 63 and 64.

3. Bypass
a. The Company may elect to bypass any crewmember who
is within two (2) years of the FAA mandated retirement age
for a Captain or First Officer/IRO position, as of the system
bid effective date of his vacancy and who requires
initial/transition training. (contract, p.318)

Bidding back is independent of what happens to classics. They can bid back to the front seat in any vacancy bid, or vacancy/realignment bid...

If all 280ish can hold onto their medical, and only fly with pilots younger than 60 during that time ... no hiring for a year and a half.

If the other 157 plumbers can do the same, maybe no hiring for a year ....

So if those stars completely align and I hit powerball next week ... there will be no more hiring for 1 year ... realistically !

But I could be wrong, it happened once before, I think ...

Any idea where the vast majority of those vacancies will be? That's right... the Great White North. Both Capt and FO vacancies in the lower 48 will be few and far between. At least for the foreseeable future. So if these guys want to get a window seat anytime soon, they will have to pack their bags for ANC. Have fun!

The key word is "may". Keep that in mind when you bid ANC for bypass pay.

The requirement to fly with a pilot younger than 60 is only an international rule. It does not apply domestically.

This is a stand-alone bill. It is not a part of an appropriations bill. It will not be vetoed.
