I've thought for some time (especially considering our safety record!) that folks who jumpseat into MEM to operate outbound should (must) be able to use a sleep room. I view it this way ... who's rested better, the guys who spent all day at a hotel, especially after flying all night the night before; or; the guy who did 20 last minute errands for the wife and kids so that things would run smoother while he was away from home!*?

I'm impressed with the whole sleep room philosophy but we REALLY need more of them so that ANYBODY that wants one can get one. How about if we use the recliner rooms for more sleep rooms? We could put the recliners in the TV room.

All the above said, when I've approached James Brodie, and said, "Hey James, I had a really bad day at home and could REALLY use a sleep room." He's given me one ...

Okay, let me take this as I hear it. You want the company to basically make up for our lack of responsibility. We know we're going to work, we commute into Memphis, and then it's the company's responsibility to give us a place to sleep for 2 or 3 hours? How about we commute into our domicile with enough time to get rested prior to showtime for our trip. I know that's a unique concept but remember, we have a joint responsibility to be prepared for our trip. It's not just Fred's responsibility. The difference between you and the hub turning crew is that Fred makes them do the hub turn. He doesn't make you commute from wherever you live. Sorry, gotta raise the bullsh1t flag on this one......

Sorry Fecav8r,

Gotta raise the BS flag on you ... I am responsible and do show up rested (as far as you know), but the commuters at this CO save millions of $'s that all go to the bottom line. So the expense, not to mention safety, of having a # of extra sleep rooms for ANY commuting pilot should be born by the CO. Just a cost of doing business/safety. Or maybe we should all commute in SUN afternoon and ALL take the sched MON AM D/H's???

And yes, I commute, and no, there are not nearly enough sleep rooms....

First off, if you show up rested, you don't need a sleep room. And I've heard this argument for years of how the commuters save this company so much money. I really don't want to get into that argument on this thread, but I don't think that has anything to do with whether you deserve a sleep room or not. Bottom line is if you are hub turning, the company has an obligation to ofer you a sleep room. But reality is there is now way the company can supply everybody possibly hub turning, everybody possibly deadheading in, everybody that is done but waiting to jumpseat home, and everyone that is done but is not commuting home till the next morning with a rack. Sorry

In my short time here I have learned the company does not care how much we save them as commuters. At least that is how the company behaves. We should get together and refuse to deviate for a quarter and see how that works. Maybe then someone will show some love for the commuter.

We could have negotiated a sleep room for every hub turning pilot...sadly, we did not.

Safety issue is very valid. It is scary sometimes at the end of the week watching the front enders fight off fatigue.

fecav8r ... now you're sounding like a true non-comuter flight manager (just for the record, you had a reputation of being one of the more reasonable ones). Your suggestion that I'm being irresponsible is a bit offensive. I don't want the company to make up for MY lack of responsibility, I want the company to realize REALITY!

I have a crash pad, I commute in EARLY. I lay down and TRY MY BEST to sleep before my a.m. flying. Despite trying my best to sleep, I usually don't sleep well that first night. In an effort to be responsible (AGAIN!) I usually leave the crash pad a little early (what if I have a flat tire on the way to work or my airport car won't start?) and arrive with maybe an hour to spare before check-in. I could really use an hour nap about now bot NOOOOOOOOO!, Not allowed! Very short sighted if you ask me?

WE NEED MORE SLEEP ROOMS SO THAT ANYBODY WHO WANTS ONE CAN GET ONE!

So, in effect, what you are saying is that the layovers provided by the company do not provide adequate rest. Otherwise there's very little difference in being rested when you commute in and working a flight in.
