Opinions on upcoming FDX excess bids
#21
...In the meantime, to mitigate the amount of excessed pilots and thereby saving training costs, our Union could demand the elimination of all carryover thereby creating more lines.
....They could also encourage the company to be more liberal with their leave of absence policy so folks can pursue outside opportunities such as military stuff, contract flying, barista at starbucks, etc. (I know OR recently changed this policy, and as usual, our Union did nothing).

It seems to be a win-win for all --- these leave of absence requests would be completely voluntary --- and I know of two 727 guys over the past 2 years (a FO & SO) that have asked and been denied.
They wanted to pursue non-flying related outside business opportunities.
Isn't this a common practice among flight attendants at many of the pax carriers? (...I believe NWA allowed many flight attendants to do this voluntarily to help themselves, their families, and others junior to them).
If this is truly a zero-cost/low-cost option it should be seriously considered.
