Unhappy Very sad story...

This is shocking, I've never heard about her before...

"A Life in the Skies Crashes to Earth" Tells of Tragic End for Former IPAer

We begin today’s news on a sad note. A Tacoma Washington newspaper has a heartbreaking story about the recent death of a former IPA pilot, R... D... (wasn't sure id posting her name would be appropriate?)
The 51 year old’s body was found along railroad tracks in Tacoma last month.
The one time UPS DC-8 pilot had struggled to overcome drug and alcohol addiction and at the time of her death appeared to have been homeless.
A number of our crewmembers have expressed their sadness over [her] death and her battle with addiction.
[She] was one of the first women hired to fly for Evergreen International Airlines and was eventually hired by UPS where she reportedly flew international routes. What began as a promosing aviation career ended in 2004.
Police say the exact circumstances of her death are unknown except that she was struck by a train the night of May 8.
According to family members, [she] battled alcoholism and was addicted to meth. Her family now hopes to use [her] story to warn others of the dangers of meth and how it kills people and destroys families.

Only sad if she was junior to you.

We got a lot of tragedy in the world--disease, accidents, and some just darn bad luck. Meth addiction, however nasty, isn't one of those things that sneaks up and shows up on a recurrent physical or an MRI. We are blessed in this world with getting to make some choices, and drugs...especially meth...is a horrible choice. Those educated enough to fly DC-8s around the world were probably aware of some of the downside risks.

Drugs do destroy lives. But unlike cancer, furloughs, accidents, or being a victim of crime, drugs don't come out of the dark and sneak up on us. We abuse them willfully.

Sorry if I'm not a ray of sunshine today. Three friends killed in plane crashes in the last month, and another little gal I know killed in a car wreck. I don't have enough tears or sadness to share with junkies today...

Do you think her family and friends, who loved her with all their heart, whose lives are also now destroyed by this, got to experience this pain willfully?

If you don't have enough tears or sadness to share with junkies today, perhaps you could show a little respect to the innocent folks devastated by this who had no choice in the matter.

Ever heard the saying, "If you don't have anything nice to say, just keep your piehole shut," Albie?

You don't know squat about her situation, and what might have led her to that. Nor do I. But, I think we can give her a break, now. She's dead.

Albie, I typically have a lot of respect for what you write on here. However I agree with the others.

I know two people, both highschool friends who's meth addiction led to jail in one case, and death in the other. I don't know why either of them started, and I agree that it's a horrible and stupid choice. However to see what it's done to their families and friends is as bad, perhaps worse, than death because they have to deal with it on a daily basis.

It's hard to judge somebody when we don't know the circumstances. The mind can do some evil things.

Not true. Addiction is an illness, not a choice. They are increasingly finding that addiction is as pathological as any other illness. Someone with a shortage of brain neurotransmitters like gamma-aminobutyric acid is no different than someone else getting cancer.

You can't tell an addict to control their impulses any more than you can tell a diabetic's pancreas to make more insulin.
