Default sick question

I was sick the other day and was concerned I might not be fit for reserve duty. Fortunately I felt better today (a day before my reserve duty began). I logged in well only to find I was already assigned a trip a day before my reserve A+ duty began, and I was charged sick leave for the hours of that trip. I'm trying to figure out what my status really is right now. Will I be assessed the sick hours for the trip I was actually ready willing and able to do? If so, am I off the hook for getting called for the period the system still erroneously has me listed as sick for? I already let the system know I was well, and I let a crew resources person know as well. The crew resources person thought I wouldn't be charged sick time in this instance but it still shows up in my calendar and my sick bank is decremented.

Yes, you will be charged sick for trips they pulled you from. You will not be available for another trip that touches that footprint. However you may be able to talk to the schedulers and do a make up sick trip in that window (only practical if it was a long trip). This assumes Fedex.

At 0700 Elvis time is when they pull you from a trip for sick leave. If it is a 5 day trip they will pull you up to 48 hour out. If it is a short trip they will pull any trip that shows within 24 hours of 0700. Since it was an A+ trip I assume they assigned you before 0700 and then pulled you at 0700. Section 25.G.3

You might also try to check what your leveling status was, to confirm they legally assigned the trip to you in order. Not that I think they would try to pull something like that if they saw you had called in sick.

Just a quick gotcha on the leveling thing, recently I was called out of order for a trip and they explained that they can assign the trip to anyone on reserve if it 'fits their(the crewmember) schedule better'. This is one of those gems that apparently was in the last contract (not concessionary!?). Don't have the quote at hand but is an interesting little tidbit if you like to bid reserve.

I have been on Reserve most of the last 3 years. I've been assigned a trip EVERY TIME I've called in SCK. It seems as though they make a point of assigning everyone that calls in SCK on Reserve (maybe the same trip for everyone?) as incentive to prevent sick leave abuse?

That's true only for trips which are in excess of 50 hours TAFB. If they try to pull that on you on a shorter trip, raise the BS flag!

What raises your head above the ridgeline is the sick call itself - regardless of how much in your bank, OR whether or not you make it up.

I didn't call in for two years. Then I called in three times in one month, and got a call from our illustrious ex-ACP. "What, are you dying?" was how he started the conversation.....

Now that you mention it, I have been on first fly for the last several days, and 3 sick guys under me all got put on the same trip (and charged sick for it) before a 4th guy got it. Seems like I should have gotten it as the #1 person available on first fly. Whats up with that? Is a scheduler trying to make a statement? Seems like that's a foul...

Interesting experience. I would call it a management technique to use your sick bank up at no cost whatsoever to the company. Brilliant! The sick guys all getting assigned the same trip is a good one too.

Only goes to show you, don't call in sick until you have been assigned. If they aren't trying to teach us that lesson I think they are using the wrong teaching plan.
