Before we even talk of BLG reduction we have to talk caps on flying. Almost every time a decent open trip shows on MD-11 MEM Capt board it is picked up by a calendar blocker or someone flying a full month already. My personal favorite is the guy who picked up a charter and has had a total of only 10 days in 3 plus months without an activity on it. He has no days off in November at all. Don't get me wrong, it is his contractual right to do that. Just don't talk to me about a BLG cut while guys like him make over 200 hours in one month. I wonder what the real BLG average is if you factor in all the carry over and make up being done right now? I bet a cap on those two alone would suck up any excesses and maybe even cause us to hire.

Carryover - Someone should figure out how many extra hours are in those trips.

Listen ... I'm all for ANYTHING we can do to minimize furloughs (including monthly caps, no vacation buy-back, no VLT/DFT) but I fail to understand the no-carryover argument? How could the company possibly rtb everyone to domicile at the end of the month and still deliver packages during the carryover period?

It's not that all carryover needs to be eliminated, just the 7-12 day long trips that D/H out on the last Sunday of the bid month. Simply moving the beginning of the bid month to Sunday from Monday would greatly reduce the carryover flying.

But if the company did that, they couldn't get guys to fly the equivalent of 200 lines at straight pay? So why would they do that, either the company or the guys flying extra at straight time pay?

With a temporary cap to prevent BLG reduction and furlough you can still bid and be awarded carryover. The difference is you will be removed from anything in the new month that exceeds BLG and cannot make it up until the need to reduce BLG is finished. As I said, my guess is this would possibly lead to us hiring if we really did that. Another way to look at it is no extra flying at all until this "crisis" has passed.

I have confidence our Negotiating Chairman is hammering this out as we speak. At a critical time like this, thank goodness we have someone working for this pilot force to make sure we can navigate these dangerous waters and keep everyone in the boat. Could you imagine being rudderless at a time like this? It would be nothing less than gross buffoonery to not have a Chairman in place and working for this pilot group right now.
