and while you spin yourself through the roof anticipating the worst, don't forget to ignore things like this...

Major Shipper Drops DHL
11/5/2008

Traffic World Staff

Parcel industry consolidator Unishippers became the highest-profile shipper yet to abandon DHL in the United States, announcing to its customers that it has moved to UPS.

The Unishippers move follows an apparent decision by Walgreens last month to drop an shipping agreement with DHL as the express carrier faces a rapid decline in business in the United States and a deeper pullback from domestic delivery than was earlier announced.

DHL parent Deutsche Post World Net last week scaled back its earnings projections for the third quarter partly because of the weakening economy in North America. The company scheduled a press conference for next week to discuss "further steps" in restructuring its troubled U.S. business.

Sources say that restructuring included laying off several hundred sales workers last month. DHL officials refused to comment on that and on growing suggestions that DHL was unable to reach an agreement with UPS on a transportation contract in the United States.

UPS now is openly seeking disgruntled DHL shippers, even posting a prominent "Welcome Center for DHL Customers" on the UPS Web site.

Unishippers, a franchise business that consolidates shipments for small business customers, apparently took the UPS bait and announced the switchover in a letter to customers Oct. 31. Company President Dan Lockwood said in the letter Unishippers switched because it wanted to "do more" for customers.

You are drinking too much of the Kool-Aid. The IPA could care less about the junior pilots here.

Don't know how long you've been Brown, or why you would say that, but I totally disagree. While I was still a new-hire, in basic indoc, the Teamsters went out on strike. We were threatened with discharge if we didn't show up for class. The union called the Teamsters and they established a picket at the training center so we wouldn't be put in a bad position vs the Company. They didn't have to do that, especially since we were on probation. YMMv, but I think the IPA does a fairly balanced job of looking after the various constituencies.

Oh well, if the discussions I have often posted why UPS would not furlough unless Armageddon which isn't on the horizon yet. .
I believe the Brown Armageddon is indeed peaking over the horizon. Too many RIGHT-SIZE, DOWNTURN & EFFICIENT articles have been talked about and printed at Brown lately.

We are way over staffed on the -8 for current flying. -200 less retirements than planned for this year and a HORRIBLE economy with freight down 9% this year. DHL deal rumored to be a fraction of what they thought, if at all.
No way those FAVRE's in ANC are going anywhere now with losing 30% of their retirement.

You drop the -8, you can cut all the over 65 FE's, the bottom 70 FE's are too JR to displace anywhere. How many does that add up to? Too many.

Very Good Post. Talked to the IPA Military Rep today and It appears, me included, that a handful of us reserve/guard guys are taking mil leave now to get what few fulltime jobs are left just in case it happens. So I don't think its just a few people being spooked. As far as being spooled up as stated in an earlier post, well better safe then sorry. Good luck. Also, I would like to note that I have talked to the union many times in the last 5 weeks including some EB folks and they say it just can't, won't, never has and will not happen. Didn't the Captain of the Titanic say something like that. Also, the post 911 furlough was not only not executed becasue of the opentime threat, but becasue there were over 60 guys gone on mil leave and they, UPS, didn't know for how long or how many more would be called ? Put your faith in the union, but don't be stupid to take only their veiw of the situation, Read Read Read.

With all of the FDX threads, why aren't the FDX guys talking about pilot cutbacks?

3 junior friends at purple and all three worry just as much as we do...

Reading many of the posts here at first I thought some folks were simply extra cautious... Now I'm thinking some just want to be able to say "I told you so."

When we finally do get furloughed we'll all be getting on this message board to thank you our Heaven's Gate brothers and sisters for your early warnings of our imminent demise. You've convinced me, in fact I think I'm furloughed already I just haven't accepted it yet. I feel so much better having this extra time to prepare for the Armageddon.

You've convinced me that the Union (according to some here) won't do anything for us and that the over 60 guys will be picking up open time like crazy when we're furloughed (according to many others) but it feels good to know that at least the APC crowd will be there for us issuing their early doomsday warnings...

Planet Earth is about to be recycled!

Gotta run, got some body parts of mine I need to cut off before the Armageddon...

Call me crazy but I like to eat and pay the bills even after being furloughed....

Good luck to you on your mil leave! You can now put your mind at ease. You've made a choice, one which many don't have the ability to do, and we'll see you when you're done. Thanks for your service!
