The rule is follow the rules, if it doesn't make sense for the company to want something done don't do it, if its a grey area don't go there, if you don't like or agree with a rule or policy involve the union to get it changed or have back up when you draw a line in the sand. If its illegal or marginal don't do it, if you are thinking I can get away with this keep in mind that the company tracks everything. The place lives on Industrial Engineering.

Nobody has ever been terminated for delaying a flight or causing a cancellation, as long as it was justified. If one chooses to intentionally and without good cause, delay or cause a flight to cancel it could well be be a career ending decision, and it is likely to be upheld in arbitration.
Basically, terminations have been for:
1. Testing positive for banned substances or alcohol.
2. Stealing, which includes falsifying expense reports/actual theft/not being where one is supposed to be when they are getting paid to be there/falsifying military orders.
3. Chronic no - shows/UTCs.
4. Difficulties during probation.
In truth, very few people have been fired from UPS. In fact, it's pretty hard to get to that point. One has to make an effort. There is plenty of assistance from both the union and company if one is having personal issues that affects their job.
It's pretty simple to stay employed here. Don't steal. Don't lie. Come to work on time and sober, do your job like a professional, and you'll have a nice long career. Should't be too hard...

I'be been here twenty years and have never seen that happen. Maybe a phone call, but never any sort of punitive actions. Can you please cite me an example of them going for blood over delays or a valid cancellation?

Vito-
If it was the guy in FL that I am thinking of, it was an FO and he was caught filing for driving expenses that he didn't actually incur. From MIA (base) to his home town that he was flying in and out of. His excuse? "Everyone is doing it"
I'm not sure that there is a company in America that wouldn't fire you for that.

Heard that the last guy (ONT) was dimed out by a jealous wife. Apparently he was out hiking the appalachian trail while she thought he was on a trip.

That alone goes a long way to explaining its' classification as a diesease. A thinking individual wouldn't be able to make the rationalization that you point out.
