Well this company's handling of things is in bad shape no doubt. The rest of the air cargo business seems to be doing just fine

Serious question, but who made that promise? Are you referring to the IPA pres? His crystal ball seems to be tuning a different frequency than UPS'. Peak is just over 120 days away. At least 30 contractor aircraft lined up for peak. There won't be any additional problems ... IMHO

IMO, the answer to your question is this.....when you do not need OT/JA to cover your bills. That's just plain pathetic.

Agreed.

You are wise beyond your years ... ;)

My friends at Astar/ABX would disagree.

UPS isn't in the cargo business, nor do they want to be. They are in the small package business. That is their business model and it's been that way since the inception of the company over a hundred years ago.

Yeah, judging from the last quarter's results (and the last 97 years or so), the company is teetering on the brink of collapse...

Better get out while you can.

wait - this was the original post -

"Oh wait, wait - they were downgraded. If you are stupid enough to run out and spend every dime of a captain paycheck right after an upgrade......... well, sorry you deserve whatever mess you got yourself into. It's called planning ahead and living below your means."

What I stated was living on your captains salary after being a capt for 3- 4 years is not irresponsible. Just as others have stated it was not irresponsible for an FO to live w/in his means after 3- 4 years. Never did I state anything about PO or JAs.

Tell that to the Louisville judges and divorce lawyers.

I'm not so sure I agree that we are just a small package company or that our business model is structured for such:

I think D.Scott Davis is actually trying to transform UPS into the "Walmart" of shipping whereas when you think of any shipping needs, UPS is your first choice.

UPS: Speeches

-AND-

"UPS fired on all cylinders in the second quarter even in the face of a mixed global economic environment," said Scott Davis, UPS's chairman and CEO. "Thanks to superb execution, our U.S. domestic reorganization is producing better than expected results. Substantial growth in our international segment continues to outpace the market. It's clear the strategic direction we've set for the company is proving successful."

--------------------------------------

Like Walmart, UPS has tried to prune expenses to the bare minimum. Where I think Mr.Davis will find a fork in the road, or the back of his head, is that Sam Walmart's philosophies on efficiencies were around since Day1-and has become a part of the Walmart legacy or to some the Walmart cult. For example, on their Twin commanders they serve "Sam's Club" soda not "Coca Cola"....it's cheaper.

UPS on the other hand, has gone through numerous gyrations, managerial paths, and labor relations that will hinder Mr. Davis' attempt to "Walmart" his corporation. He may receive kudos for marketing UPS into a full-service shipper (feel free to insert your snide remarks, I know they're comin' LOL), but he will fail miserably in changing our culture because too much "momentum" will resist this. Clearly, his speech above does not mention the need for employees and their impact on the bottom line.

Lastly, I find it very interesting that we have received Polar Ops authorization for the -400 (for disruptions in ANC-even though PDX/SEA/ONT worked just fine), however; we haven't started flying packages for next-day service like FDX--SDF to Asia.

Just my two cents,

FF-Furlough Fodder
