Excuse my ignorance, I know nothing about international travel and have never bought anything overseas...
Could anyone explain what is illegal about buying a watch or other good in Asia and bringing it back with you? It seems to me that you're just buying something. Are these goods illegal in themselves for some reason?
I just can't see why you're not allowed to buy a watch. (??) Is it something to do with copyrights or trademarks?

I do. I just feel that they are probably attached to a somewhat fake person. Beauty, skin deep, all that stuff. It is our duty to please that booty though.

You guys crack me up with all the "I would never buy anything counterfeit!" nonsense. To clarify, I've never bought a copy watch, expensive or otherwise, but have been impressed by the hi fidelity reproductions I've seen others sporting. $300 for a really nice looking fake Tag/Rolex/etc is not the worst use of $$ I've seen a pilot make on a trip. Think of it as discount man jewelry... if you're into that. No one, and I repeat NO ONE, is pulling any wool with a d@mn G-shock! Furthermore do none of you own anything NOT purchased at WalMart or Costco? So no one on here has a single brand label of anything, right? I'm calling BS... I've got a closet full of decent clothes - purchased at Goodwill by my wife
.
Just seems funny that I've yet to have a PVG layover where everyone wasn't chomping at the bit to get to the 580 market yet the demographics on APC seem to find that all beneath them. Yeah, that $8 Tiffany bracelet for the wife was a complete waste of money! Didn't get me l@id or anything!
C ya at showtime with a duffel full of lithium batteries and LBFM's!

Nothing wrong with buying a watch that doesn't claim to be a Rolex when it is not, a knock off Rolex is a Illegal as a pirated movie or a set of Golf Clubs that claim to be Callaway when they are not, one guy got in trouble here in Narita for that recently, they confiscated the fake clubs and slapped him with a heafty fine.

Back in the day (mid-80s), something called "Members Only" lightweight jackets were all the rage, and retailed over $50. Come to find out, outside Osan Air Base (South Korea, south of Seoul), one could purchase said jackets for ~$10. So during a Team Spirit TDY, I was pawing through the jackets and found one I liked. Took it up front, and Papa-San was ringing it up, when I noticed....NO "Members Only" tag!
When I sputtered a little, the wise old man said "No problem, Joe." He then reached behind him, pulled out a plastic bag containing about 20,000 "Members Only" tags, and stitched it on for me with the sewing machine sitting right there.
Taught me a lot about "Brand Names," and what they are really "worth." These days, I like Serengeti sunglasses (because I like their quality), the Citizen Skyhawk watch mentioned earlier, and Rockport shoes (because they're very comfortable). Beyond that, not much of a Brand-Name dropper. And no, I'm not part of the Apple mafia either. But I will sit and nod earnestly as you tell me how great they are.
