Default Family Time...

How often should an average pilot during the 1st five yrs expect to be away from his family per month? Is it possible to have a quality family life and fly for Big Brown?

I sit reserve as a 727 FE 13 of every 28 days. I'm home every day of the month and usually only fly 2 or 3 times. QOL is the best part of the job at UPS, at least in my experience. A lot of guys on this forum have called me crazy and have tried to convince me of how bad it really is at UPS. The guys who fly intl are gone a lot on longer trips, but that is their choice. The 727 and DC-8 have great QOL and go junior. In fact the 11/04 newhires are 14 and 15 on the seniority list out of 45 FOs. So if QOL is what you want, you can have it by bidding the 727/DC-8.

Could you hold a miami domicile on those a/c? I once heard that it's only the 757 that is miami based. Could you clarify this for me.

We have 3 domiciles and will soon open a fourth. Miami and Ontario, CA are 757 bases only and L-ville has everything else. SDFZ is the way we ID our SDF based crews who fly international on the 757/767. Anchorage will open next spring and will eventually have all the brand new 747-400s and MD-11s. The TA seems as if it will make life harder for the intl guys. The domestic A-300 and 757 crews get worked over pretty hard. But, like I posted before, the 727/DC-8s have great schedules and phenomenol QOL. Since we only have one pay scale it makes having to transition to larger ac unneccessary.

Depends on where you live. If you live in domicile, then yes. If you live somewhere else and have to commute, then count on being gone 2 wks a month. Plus three or four days per month travel time in there also.

At FEDEX if your on reserve you sit reserve 15 out of 28 days with days of use depending on airplane and time of year. Also fedex is on 1 hour call out.

okay, if you wanted to live in Miami, Florida, you would be flying the 757. So then what kind of flying could you expect? Destinations? more intl or dom?
Can your schedule get as good as you say the 72/dc-8 gets?
How long you think it would take to get such good schedules(as above)? 5yrs?

I hear the Miami schedules are brutal for commuters, but pretty good if you live there. They do a lot of day flying turns. Leaving MIA at mid-morning and back home in time for dinner does not sound bad to me. For the guys that commute though they have to pay for a crashpad that they commute to an awfule lot since the schedules are mainly during the week. I have only been there once so my info is second hand.

Would you say that Miami is very senior, or could a fledging pilot hold it as a domicile under a 5yr mark?

And thanks for all your responses Lil J

Some newhires are going to Miami now. You'd be able to bid out of the SDF dom within a year or so. I think that our pilot hiring will go through the roof in the next 6-18 months despite what our airline VP is saying. UPS is all about conservatism in that they will never share the "big secret" with anyone. Even if our TA passes we will still hire a ton IMO.
