Another issue that need to be corrected in the next contact is the type of trip assignment for pilots on R-24. It is pretty obvious that the whole point of R-24 is so that commuters can sit reserve at home (long call out) while RA and RB is typically bid by junior or local pilots (short call out). We need language that specifies that R-24 pilots must be assigned a live leg revenue trip and NOT a local base HSBY period (typically 4 days!). That is what RA and RB pilots are for.

Last month on R-24 I was assigned two 4 day HSBY in MEM back to back and didn;t get used at all, total BS. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind getting used on reserve and having to go to work but getting assigned HSBY while on R-24 is just wrong.

Think about it...

My take..

The company hates R-24. They are contractually required to make at least 10% of R lines into R-24. They are also contractually allowed to bring R-24 guys to HSTBY when they are short on reserves (when are they not these days?)...

They'd much rather not put anyone on hotel standby (and pay for the hotel) and keep reserves at base. The periods are slightly longer (12:00 vs. max 11:30). The way our sick call system works, it can be difficult to assign R-24 guys to trips. You can't fill AM launches the next day. They hope someone will pick up a trip that is open for the next day and beyond. And really, I don't think scheduling looks much more than one day out.

They'd love to shorten the call out times even more. We can already get called out one hour prior with late call parking.

R-24 could be a real good deal if we change our contract and not allow them to assign us to base HSTBY. I agree that the idea is to get 24 hours notice from your home, then fly a trip. Unfortunately, it hasn't been used that way for some time. I guess the only positive is that you don't have to pay for a crash pad.
