Awesome screen name.

The big difference here is that the CS was already in the pool. The OP isn't.

Me being in the pool makes absolutely zero difference. I am in the same position as any other guy who is not yet on property, as far as hiring qualifications and pre-requisites go.

It is important to understand that when I called the Manager of Pilot Recruitment, it was with the information that the contract I might enter was clearly, and strictly, a commuting contract. His words were clear: "if it is a commuting contract, and you live in the U.S., there is no problem".

I don't know how this would apply to someone living abroad, but who is paying U.S. taxes as a full-time resident of the U.S. That might also be doable, however it is not a question I can answer.

But, if while in the pool, I had chosen to move to China and fly for an airline there, while living there full time, and while benefitting from the expat tax exclusion, I would have lost my chance to be hired, even though I was in the pool. Make sense?

Good luck!

Thanks man. CS pretty much said what I was going to, and what I've heard as well. It's a dead issue to me, but judging by the FE thread, it won't be settled here! So people should call/email recruitment with the question if they continue to have concerns.

Something else that FedEx may ask is if you took advantage of the expat IRS deduction. If you did, then you have, in effect, declared that you live outside of the US.

A simple way of determining your status could be to answer these questions: What address is on your paycheck from your Middle East company? What address did you provide to the IRS on your last return? Do you own a house in the US (shows intent to return...)?

If you apply and have worked overseas, be sure to fully disclose the nature of the job, your living arrangements, etc. on the app.

Not sure who was the Manager of Pilot Recruitment when CS contacted him, but the guy who filled that job for a long time is now in another position. Seems that the answer would still hold true though, as you can be sure that FedEx Legal had a part in the determination.....

Does anyone know if this USPS restriction applies to all US carriers that carry US post? Also, trying to find a reference for this USPS requirement.

No. Several other airlines carry small amounts of post and they don't have this restriction.

Reference for Fedex USPS requirement:

https://fedex.pilotcredentials.com/i...qualifications

Candidates for jobs involving handling or access to U.S. mail cannot be considered for employment if they have resided outside the U.S., Guam or Puerto Rico for more than (6) six months during the last (5) years prior to today's date, other than the following verifiable exceptions: active duty in the U.S. Uniformed Service; trailing spouse or dependent of someone working for the U.S. government (military or civilian); missionary; student attending school in a foreign country; Peace Corps participant; employee of a U.S. based employer/company or other extraordinary circumstances.

I believe the reason we have this restriction is that we have access to the cargo hold. On pax carriers that carry the mail, its put in the belly where nobody has access in flight unless you're Bruce Willis
