Secret clearance vs. security clearance. I don't think you are getting a secret clearance to work at Fedex. Also, back to my original question, what about all the other airlines that carry US mail? They don't have this requirement.

A secret clearance is a security clearance, just a specific level. So as far as that goes it is kind of the same, as to why you have to have one for FedEx and not for other carriers, who knows. You will have to look at the contract between FedEx and the USPS.

Thanks MD. I thought they were just referring to the SIDA and standard airline background security checks. But that brings up another point, if you get based in HKG once you get hired, how do you maintain this clearance? Perhaps this can just be chalked up to the higher requirements (such as a FEX within 2 years) that Fedex requires for initial hires.

Other than FedEx do you guys know if you take a job overseas is it hard to find a job in the states when/if you get tired of it and want to come back? I've looked at a few and for the coin it sounds good, don't know anybody and have never flown with anybody at FedEx so I most likely would never have a chance getting on with them but this thread got me to worrying about maybe not being able to get a job with anybody.

A couple of years ago, I applied for the ANA 767 commuting contract in Japan. I was offered the job, but since I was in the FedEx hiring pool, I was concerned about whether taking the job would affect my standing and my pre-hire requirements (specifically, living outside of the U.S.).
I called the head of pilot recruitment directly and he clearly told me, that since the ANA contract is a commuting one, there would be no problem.
Ended up not taking the job, but, learned that it would have been OK.
Good luck to you. It is definitely worth some thorough research.
