3 FDX qts for a wanna be
Hey all, I'm a long time reader, first time poster. Currently employed as a RJ driver and am anxiously ready to make the next step. I've got a few quetions about FDX's hiring process.
1. Do you need a sponsor to get an interview? If so, what can someone do to get one if they don't have one?
2. Does having a B737 type rating with no time in the actual airplane hurt you?
3. Would leaving my CA seat to go to someplace that flies big birds internationally (omni, kalitta) help or would staying where I'm at be better?
Thanks!

Welcome to APC!
You don't need one, but in your position, it could help you A LOT. Quality of a sponsor is key too. Someone you've flown with will be better than someone that you met in an airport cafe, but neither will hurt.
Look up guys that you've flown with in the past, see if any of them are now at FedEx?
It can. It's a strong indicator that your final destination is SWA, but you'd be pretty stupid to give up FedEx for SWA if you're already on the FedEx seniority list IMHO and I think FedEx realizes that. Expect for that question to come up in an interview if you get one.
It could definitely be more hurtful to you at a place like AMR/DAL/UAL/USAir than at FedEx though.
It may not help you at FedEx, but it could help you later down the road with other airlines. But heavy time definitely won't hurt you with FedEx either, especially if you have some serious RJ PIC already (2000+ hours).
Places with 757s might be a good place to start looking at too as FedEx plans to add many more of those to their fleet and they are usually a junior aircraft.
Right now FedEx *appears* to be looking at guys with DC10/KC10/MD11 time, so going to work at some place that operates those could help you with getting a foot in the door at FedEx later on.
Also, while very unlikely, if FedEx were to buy out an airline, they'd be much more likely to try and buy out a cargo operator with similar equipment than a regional... So working for one of those outfits could do much more good for you than just building experience.
Currently employed as a RJ driver and am anxiously ready to make the next step. I've got a few quetions about FDX's hiring process.

Threeeighteen, thanks for the info. Hopefully the app window opens soon. In the mean time, it sounds like going someplace like omni would be good (I've got around 3000hrs turb pic). Are there rumors of a possible purchase of another airline by FDX?
Thanks again!

1. Do you need a sponsor to get an interview? If so, what can someone do to get one if they don't have one?Not necessary per se, but it always helps. Network, network, network. Don't be afraid to talk to former coworkers and hunt down someone you may know here. Every bit helps.
2. Does having a B737 type rating with no time in the actual airplane hurt you? I don't think it hurts. I had one when I got hired and I know a few others that do also. It never even came up in my interview. I think they know what you are up to, but I also don't think they are worried about people leaving FDX for SWA. Just my $.02
3. Would leaving my CA seat to go to someplace that flies big birds internationally (omni, kalitta) help or would staying where I'm at be better?
Again, just my $.02: I wouldn't leave where you are unless it is a step up. Lateral moves very rarely work out. What about becoming an instructor pilot or a check airman? The line check letter from the FAA looks great on a resume, plus it goes with you when you leave!
Thanks!
