Question UPS new hire question

Do all of the UPS new hires have to start out @ one of the 4 main hubs? (SDF,ONT,MIA,ANC)
Every large city has a UPS plane there, how long does it take to move on to one of those?

I'm pretty sure UPS is like FDX. Those cities are layover cities. The crew flies in, spends the day (or night if you can bid day flying) at a hotel in those cities and returns to the hub.

You will be domiciled at one of the bases that you mentioned but you don't have to live at the domicile. Most fleets have schedules that are commutable so you can live virtually anywhere. My domicile is SDF-Z (International) and I live in the Northeast.

FlyandFish,
Do you feel that you are wasting a lot of time commuting, or is it not a big deal? Also, is SDF a possibility for newhires? I heard that ANC is the bigger possibility...
If you dont mind saying, what kind of schedule to you hold?

Default New hire assignment lockin

A few other ??

How soon after initial training can you bid to a new seat/equipment?

What is your lockin after you switch?

Thanks

Newhires will generally be able to bid to new equipment after their first year. It is company's discretion to change that. After that: upgrade (FE to FO, for example) lock is one year, transition lock (FO to FO, different fleet) is 2 years. Recently, the company did allow ALL pilots to bid for the new domicile, ANC.

What is the typical new hire schedule? Would it be easier to move the family to the domicile, or to commute at first?

Commuting can be tough, it all depends upon where you're going to/from.

Whatever air line you get hired at, I think it's best to commute initially, until you have a feel for the relative seniority at the various pilot bases. If you're assigned a base like ANC for either Purple or Brown, you might be stuck there for a while. The good news at UPS is that the company will pay for your move up there right now.

All tough decisions, but if you balance your family and job requirements, you can figure it out. Good luck.
