Default US residency requirement

Does anyone know if a commuting contract job such as the Air Japan commuting contract (18 on, 10+2 off) meets the us residency requirement for a fedex pilot position? This contract comes with an initial training of about 6-7 months, the training is in Tokyo. Will this pretty much disqualify a candidate? Thank you.

jetdriven,

I was in the FedEx hiring pool for a long stretch while I flew for a major US airline. When that particular airline was facing some difficulties, I applied, interviewed, and was offered the contract with ANA, through CReW. Since I didn't want to do anything that would potentially risk my FedEx pool status, I called a couple of people from the pilot recruitment office and queried them on the residency issue. They asked, "will you be commuting for the contract?" I said yes. The FDX recruiters said it would not be a problem to accept the commuting contract. I would still be complying with my residency requirement for the Postal Service. They might have also asked me if I would be paying taxes in the US...

Hopefully you're with CReW. Since it's US based, you're essentially flying for an American company (which happens to contract your services out to a Japanese company). I hope it's the same for PARC, Rishworth, and whatever other agency you might be set up with. IMO, as long as you're paying your full taxes as a US citizen, without any expat-type exclusions, you should be fine.

I hope that helps. Good luck to you!

PS- I only called the FDX recruiters because I knew them personally after having interviewed. What I'm trying to say is, it is best that you do not attempt to contact them yourself.

I just thought of something...How do FDX guys based in CGN and HKG meet the requirement?

Maybe those HKG guys, in trouble, can use that in their defense. They were coming back to the US on days off, in order to meet the Postal Service requirements. They should get BZ's!!

Hmmmm...... interesting concept, but the MEM lawyers wearing the $19,000 Brooks Brothers suits probably got that hole covered.
