Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm trying to get an answer on min days protection from guys that have "been there and done that" before. I have carryover from Nov into Dec; about 6 days. I was awarded a line that has a 12 day trip right in the middle of Dec which ends on Christmas Day (Zulu time), but on Christmas Eve (MEM local time). I also have a trip that carries over into January. Right now I only have 13 days off (I believe we get 16 in a 5 week bid month), but I forgot to protect min days on my bid input; however, during the "bid period processing link" it allows me to enter min days off protection. So can I still protect min days off or am I screwed? Will they drop the long trip in the middle of the month or one of the carryover trips? Just kind of curious from anyone that has had this happen to them before. Thanks.

As long as your C/O was awarded (VTO counts) it counts as work days for min days off. I have a C/O trip Nov-Dec, and another from Dec to Jan, Plus my Dec trip that goes to the 25th. I listed the two C/O trips 1 and 2 priority, and the Dec trip third because I don't think they will drop a Christmas trip if there are other options. Bottom line, it would be an advantage to protect min days off. Puts you in control of your schedule in terms of what you're willing to fly. Plus you keep the hours in your make up bank, and can use the view add to cherry pick trips that you want. They can't force you to pick up trips that you don't want.

Thanks Jolly. I'm assuming that the partial day (blocking in after 0105) is based on local base time? Good to hear that you can still protect min days off during the conflict window. We'll see what happens. I thought they wouldn't drop the carry-in/over trips based on previous posts in this thread.

Bummer it didn't work for you but it can definitely be used as an effective scheduling tool as Jolly spoke of. Takes some prior planning but it can get trips over holidays dropped (even if the futures folks cringe while doing it) and some control of your schedule during the silly season.

To assure you get Christmas off using the carry-in and min days off protection strategy you need to bid a single departure line with a long trip flying through Christmas and maybe even New Year's. Then you know that trip has to be dropped and you pick up what you want during the CIC window. Works every time.
