I wish that was the case (it should be the policy) ... I was flying with an f/o that called in fatigued from HKG. He was taken off the trip, d/h directly back to MEM to explain why he wasn't properly rested for duty.

Okay....and then what happened?

He explained why he was fatigued in accordance with the FOM and FAA guidance and the company did what?

Management could be in for serious trouble if pilots are intimidated to flying unfit for duty. Circumstances beyond pilot control can cause improper rest, and I am sure the company will work hard to mitigate any problems they can control. This is probably the reason for a MEM visit - fact gathering to work mitigation.

Sure I got asked what happened and then nothing. I always try to get plenty of rest before work but sometimes it just doesn't happen. Better I explain why that happened than why I bent some metal.

But keep telling that story, it's tales like those that make people hesitant to call in fatigued more so than management themselves.

The "it can't happen to me" mentality is alive and well.

When you worry too much about having to explain yourself you might end up taxiing into the dirt, being unstable at 500' or busting an altitude on a go around (due to the unstable approach?).

All those were highlighted from the last round of ERCs. Some of those have been highlighted as "at risk behavior". I don't know the significance of that designation. Does that mean you only get one, two or three mulligan's before your report is rejected? We had some reports rejected last round too.

Our Safety Officer was irritated by so many errors. He didn't mention too many fatigue calls.

If an operation operates like the military why complain. I want you to take that hill even if it requires you to crawl! That's an order soldier!

Anthrax, ditto .............. you obviously don't have a problem with calling a spade a spade ........... We have a serious problem going on here and to insult and attempt to address with condenscending enuendo is a testament to the problem in of itself ...............

MEMFO4EVER .............. Kudos to you for actually telling it like it is ........... flying tired is what has to be the root cause of our flying issues here, it makes no sense to explain it any other way ............ Depending on your seniority, there exists no sane scheduling and those who don't want to admit that FATIGUE and STRESS are in intrical part of this flying problem, are kidding themselves and everyone around them ................ Thanks for your candid reply in the face of criticism and ignorance

So the non-commuter that stays up all day working on his honey-do list and then drives to the Democrat lot is safe?

Commuting is only a problem when you don't plan on showing up for work rested and ready to go.
