I'm not an engineer....but why not just leave engine #2 off? No expensive recerts or new engines required! Didn't Air China do that with a 747? Seems like the obvious solution!

You're absolutely right ... your no engineer!

*** ... if you'd ever flown a DC-10 you might know that a high TOGW Takeoff on a hot day can be pretty exciting with all 3 engines operating. Will it fly after an engine failure (like certification requires!) on just 2 engines? I'm not sure and I do not want to find out.

Please post the picture of the alleged Air China 747 with the #2 engine "left off." More likely what you are confusing it with is a 747 with 5 engines!*? Yes, the 747 has the capability to "captive carry" a spare engine on the wing, I've done it myself ...

Even snoops is a little mistaken on that one. The "seatbelts" are an actual engine tool (you can see the tool number stencil) used to secure the fan for shipping or for ferry flight with that engine shut down. Not for securing the engine to the shipping stand.

Kalitta Air (Known as American International Airways at the time) did a true 3 engine ferry on a 747 back in the 90's. Some cracks to the #3 pylon were discovered so the only answer was to remove the engine throw it inside on the main deck and fly the plane like that. It took a lot of coordination with Boeing engineers and the Feds, but it was flown from HNL to Oscoda Michigan that way.
