UPS to hire 40 pilots
#731
All this palarva about Masters Degrees in whatever field came about when HR started to put their noses into the hiring process. Why a Masters Degree, in an non related field, carries more weight in the hiring process than the experience gained from contacting Mumbai on HF at zero dark thirty when the airspace looks like the Battle of Britain or flying 208 minutes ETOPS across the North Pole with no HF coverage for 3 hours or navigating across the Ho Chi Mins FIR with a monsoon and CBs up to 50000' engulfing you and the surrounding FIRs refusing your deviation requests, is well beyond me.
In the past, HR were there to make notes and ask one question only, if allowed, and now its the Chief Pilots who are allowed the occasional question while the HR folk nod their collective heads as if they know what is being spoken about.
While I agree with F15andMD11s comment about too much flight time hurting a candidate, I struggle with how a 30 year old with 5000TT, who has never seen whats on the eastern side of the Atlantic Ocean and a Master Degree in Leaf Shape Patterns would be more acceptable to a company than a 45 year old 15000 hour wide body pilot who has flown throughout the world?
I take solice in the fact thats its an HR issue and that if pilots were doing the hiring the 15000 hour guys would be in class from Day1. Thats just my opinion, however as my wife says, Im usually wrong…...

I realize UPS is an overnight delivery company.... Basic question: as a newhire flying domestic flights (if awarded), what % of your flying is back of the clock from midnight to 8am? Obviously a lot of flights during the day too, but what % at night after midnight?

@Fetzervalve- as a new hire expect it all to be approximately 0000Z show and on duty until 12Z. These are guesses as junior folks cold be doing AM turns. Show at 8Z until approximately 17z.

If you're flying the domestic stuff I'd guess about 80% is backside of clock stuff. This is only a guess, haven't run the numbers.

I am being humorish however this is a very true statement and something we see every week

Yeah, but there's really no weather at night to deal with, so it's pretty easy flying.

Two points,
The discrepency in the UPS and IPA retirement numbers can be expained by guys taking early retirement instead of going to age 65.
Fetzervalve,
Almost all my buds at the pax airlines fly wide-body international flights because thats where the big money is. Guess what, they fly primarily at night. Just something to think about. They also get to watch movies and eat ice cream sundaes in first class on their rest breaks, but I digress.
