As it currently stands, that number is pretty close if you're in the bottom 300.
Last say you're seniority is 2250 (didn't look at the list, don't know who it is.) The junior captain is 1574. That was not on this last bid. Captain went senior to that at 1536.
That puts you 676 junior to the bottom captain. There are 624 retirements through 2023 and 756 through 2024. So you need another 8-9 years of retirements to reach the seniority of the junior captain. That doesn't take into account there are 366 FOs currently bypassing upgrade. As shown by this last bid, previous bypassers will take an upgrade when they have X amount of people below them so 8-9 years of retirements may not be enough.
You can say we will grow, people will retire early. etc. That may be true, but you can't count on it. How many net growth cities have we had in the last 8 years? 0. They told '88 hires there would be 3000 pilots in 5 years. 27 years later, still never hit 3000.
While I hope UPS grows, buys airplanes, and hires pilots, these numbers are the only sure things.

Given all that, along with UPS' fleet composition and their cost slashing/knee breaking labor practices being a closely held secret along the volatile nature of the economy no wonder so many are so angry.
Imagine if they could have known any of this going in...they could all be at Delta euphoric and content.
Imagine such a nirvana.

Shows how out to lunch some guys are with regards to the state of the company and its effects to those at the bottom.
Now if only the junior pukes would just Shut-UP, toe the line and quit complaining about lack of progression like they all enjoyed.

I'm still confused. Did someone promise me an 8 year upgrade? I missed that in the interview. They also forgot to tell me that they'd get rid of 3 types, get bigger airplanes, change the retirement age, and throw the economy in the gutter. I want my money back..

It's amazing how everything at UPS is a fight. Look at the hotel in Warsaw. The contract was renewed and got worse. Before, we got free breakfast and had to pay for internet. I'm sure everyone thought with the addition of iPads, the internet would be included in the next contract. Not only did we not get free internet, they took away the free breakfast. Is it a big deal? No. It just shows how what the company thinks of us. This is just one example of many we could all give.
Hopefully whenever these contract talks end (hopefully in the next 5 years) our schedules, pay and retirement will improve. Right now, with the meteoric rise in seniority at the legacies, it would be hard for me to say come to UPS vs DAL/AA/UAL. The job security is not necessarily there at UPS like before now that the furlough has happened.
It comes down to money vs QOL which is subject to change based on contracts.
Right now here are the percentages of FOs that are bypassing captain upgrade which is the wall you will hit for QOL schedules as a FO.
SDFZ -37%
SDF MD - 33%
SDF 75 - 28%
A300 - 41%
MIA - 37%
ONT - 37%
ANC 74 - 8%
ANC MD <1%
All this being said, I do like my job. My seniority, however, is right on the edge of holding decent lines and totally sucking.
